Peter Whittingham is a man for assists

By Terry Phillips

He’s been with the Bluebirds for more than eight years and scored 85 goals in close on 400 appearances. And he’s still producing for City.

Yes, I’ve heard all the moans and groans about how he’s gone past his best, but Whitts is still delivering for City.

His delivery from the corner which gave Bruno Manga the chance to equalise was spot on. Is there anybody in the Championship consistently better than Whittingham when it comes to corners and free-kicks? I can’t think of anybody. His level of assists on goals is among the best in the second tier.

The big target for Whittingham, his central partner Aron Gunnarsson and the wide midfield men is to help the team keep possession. City let the ball go far too easily at times and that right now is their biggest fault. Opposing teams have the majority of possession far too often.

It was a beautiful ball for the goal, but on a serious note can anyone actually tell me how many freekicks hes scored in the last four seasons because i cant remember many. Certainly none in the last 3???

So that is simply not good enough for a man in the team for being a free kick specialist as he doesnt affect the game any other way

Agreed, it would be hard to call Whitts a free-kick specialist

I can't remember the last genuine goal scoring free kick we had.

We play a style of football thats ugly to refs. A long ball to Jones who constantly grapples with the centre half who are often pushing down on him, so they let it go.

In the DJ era, we had movement with wingers who constantly caused issues around the box and often got fouled....How many goals have our wingers scored this season ? We also had a striker in Chops/Macormack who made runs into space and a target man not scarred of getting his knees dirty

I beleive we have seen the best of Whitts but he is not the issue. The issue are forwards that don't move and wingers that don't do enough. Malky had defensive wingers, DJ attacking, that why we seen more of Whitts goals in those years. How many pens have we had in the last 3 seasons ? Probably as many as Whitts scored that 20 goal season !!!

For me, this guy is one of our best players.

Yes, he backs out of tackles sometimes, but then he's not a hard tackler. That's why he needs someone in midfield with him who will stay behind him and do all the dirty work - much like what Medel did for us last season.

My only real disappointment with Whitts this season has been his goal scoring dropping off since Ole left. Likely down to Slade's tactics.

The treatment Whitts gets from some fans, however, is disgusting. There are a lot of clubs in our league who would snatch him up in a heartbeat, and our fans should remember that.

When whitts was banned ,ralls took a corner that we scored from
Who's to say we don't have others who can produce good corners
Problem is no one else gets a chance
Seem to remember we scored from a pilkington corner earlier in the season :bluescarf:

How is his assist not a serious note?

He scored free kicks against Blackpool and Wolves in our promotion season off the top of my head. I'd also suggest assist from free kicks would be high and that would be just as important.

But the point is if whitts was taking them some one else would
I've just pointed out 2 occasions that we scored from a ralls and pilkington corner
Who's to say if they were taking them all we would not of scored more :bluescarf:

A well thought out post that sums up the Whittingham debate
Far to often on here Whitts gets the flak when the wingers are not doing their bit

Perfectly sums up the Whittingham debate and I would say if we had players who passed and moved like Bournemouth did the other night we would All see the Peter Whittingham we ALL love.

Well Whitts is 12th in the League so I can't imagine overall much better

Whitts is a possession football player as I stated on one of the other threads he is not a battling midfielder but when the ball is hoofed AT HIM. He controls the "pass" and looks to play football and keep possession rather than hoof ball

Lads I'm totally biased on this one I love Peter Whittingham so much so that I've convinced by wife to let me use whits as our next sons middle name.

Peter Whittingham in my opinion is a true cardiff legend. He belongs up there with any other player who pulled on a city jersey. And if he use him corrextly( in hole behind striker, again just my opinion) he could be the leagues best player. He will never win crunching tackles or run himself into the ground but that's why we need players around him to do the water carrying and let him do what he should be doing and that's winning us games.

Exactly mate. But unfortunately alot of our fans can't see this, the style of football we play makes tidy footballers look rubbish. Anyone who looses the ball it doesn't matter as long as they run around like a headless chicken.

Can't understand annis why fans criticise Peter whittingham he'd be in my team every week one of my favourite players most importantly he always sticks with us never wants to leave but when he does it will be a sad day :bluescarf:

Just need to give him weapons.

Doyle is willing to make a run, Whitts will find him !
Kennedy is so comfortable with the ball- he will get it in tight positions
Ralls first touch is not quite Whitts class, but he can take the ball with the opposition around him
Manga is a great release ball to keep possession

PLaying a static Kenwynn is not going to be his forte..... If Kenwynn is future then I don't see the need for Whitts

Kennedy and Doyle enthusiasm caused Brum problems and hey presto a penalty... :ayatollah: :ayatollah: :ayatollah:

The game is about movement and Whitts & Ralls will unlock many defences. Kennedy has trickery and a quality first touch, he can take the ball with defenders around him. Noone is the weak link in this system as he gives the ball away too easy as does Kenwynn and gunnar.
