442 diamond

Mon Mar 16, 2015 8:40 pm

Just watching Reading v Bradford and Bradford are playing this system and are getting beat and we couldn't win using it either it doesn't seem to work does it?

Works if your attacking midfielder is willing to drop in to center midfield when defending, forcing someone out wide. Causes more work for your strikers and brings them into the game alot more.

When attacking, with enough pace there shouldn't be a team who would get near you. You should only have you're keeper, center half's and Defensive midfielder back. Pushing everyone else forward playing a then 2-1-4-1-2. But it's hard to take it from the training field to the playing field with the wrong players.

I don't think it is an ideal system tbh.

Give Bradford some credit they came from 2 nil down to beat Chelsea at stamford bridge and don't forget they reached that cup final a couple of seasons ago knocking out Arsenal and a couple of prem teams along the way when they were in league 2 and credit where it's due Bradford are a good team it was a missed chance for them yesterday i expected them to beat a mediocre reading team they should of went a normal 442 instead of the diamond because i think that's what made them lose the game. :thumbright:

442 is dead..... There will always be exceptions but,

No tackling allowed any more - needs more skillful players on the pitch
Pitches except blackpool are like bowling lawns so no need to hoof it away from the mud
The best bits of grass are no longer the wings so hugging the touchline is no longer needed
Goalkeepers are more protected than Whales so being within 2 metres of them automatically results in a free kick - so no point getting to the byline and hooking a cross in and the big lad up front challenges for the ball

The game is about possession, speed, pace and mobility (plus acting) 442 doesn't give you any of this

:laughing6: :laughing6: its that time in the season where admittedly we have been over the last 6/7 years where the pressure plays on the top sides and they slip up......

Craig belleamy rarely played well in a 442. He was a 433 forward. Nooney is not a 442 winger he is probably is a championship 433 forward, Conway & Chris Burke are old fashioned 442 wingers.
Jones is not a 442 striker - he is a lone forward battering ram wanting to lay off to attacking midfielders.

If we keep Whitts next season (cue City Slicker) we need to play 4231 with Whitts as one of the 2 sitting midfielders. Its about possession not tackling nowadays, the game has moved on and we will never be more than mid table fodder unless Slade in no longer our manager

The diamond works if you have a capable enough defensive midfielder in the Makelele calibre of player to tie up all loose ends and keep play ticking over. Its why he was so highly regarded. Its why others like De Rossi were so highly regarded at other points as well.

That's the thing you need really players for the system to work it is more suited for a higher level than the championship in my opinion. :thumbright:

A diamond is NOT 4 4 2 it is 4 1 3 1 1

Its widely regarded as a 4-4-2 because the central defensive midfielder and central attacking midfielder make up a midfield of 4 alongside the wider midfielders.
