University advice....

Tue Mar 10, 2015 2:20 pm

Quite often you come across an opportunity that has you split in two minds. So board of all knowledge I ask you….

I’m going to university next year but unsure if I should stay in Cardiff where I already have a decent part time job and study? Or should I travel further afield and live in a different part of the country and worry about getting a job etc later on?

You're more likely to spend a lot more living away than at home.

I live at home while doing a full time course, and I spend a lot less money than my mates who are living here while in uni.

Stay at home much cheaper. :old:
What course you want to study?

Move away

Re: University advice....

First of all, you should be able to get a part time job wherever you end up at uni if you want one.

Secondly, when you say stay in Cardiff do you mean still live where you are living now (assuming with parents?) or move out? If living with parents, you will get less student loan / grant. And of course you lose a lot of the independence that you'd otherwise get. If you move out then some universities have rules about getting a place in Halls of Residence if you live in the same city / close to the university.

Thirdly, what are you like as a person? When I was 17/18 and looking at where to go for university I was quite shy, not very confident, not willing to put myself into unfamiliar situations etc. For me, going to university in a different part of the country meant I had no choice but to change and adapt for the better. It did me the world of good. And I stayed close enough to still follow the bluebirds!

Fourthly, seriously considering what you are going to study and why. There are way too many people just going to uni just to spend 3/4 years getting drunk and avoiding the real world while racking up huge amounts of debts.

Which he will be much better placed to do after he has a degree assuming he is studying a suitable subject (emphasis on suitable subject).
It is a sad fact that a lot of junior level jobs now ask for a degree, when in reality there is no need for one at all. But without a degree, your CV is simply ignored. A lot of companies have so many applications for vacancies now that they can afford to be so arbitrarily selective.

go to the best university you can get into, thats my advice.

if that happens to be cardiff, then thats great. either way if you choose cardiff you will save about £15k over the course of the degree in housing costs.

you need to assess whether its a price worth paying to get into a better university.

I'd definitely move away, such a better experience. If money is an issue then maybe stay at home but the less your household income is the more grant you get which doesn't have to be repaid so not sure how much dearer it would actually work out to move away :bluescarf:

Part time jobs can be more difficult when away as presumably you will come home during holidays

Cardiff University is one of the top in the UK for certain subject areas. Do your research for the subject you are interested in. If Cardiff comes up trumps, consider it because of the money you'll save in accommodation etc. BUT beware of living at home. You will miss out on the social life big time if you're not careful. It isn't just a case of cheap nights out on the booze. If you spend a lot of time with students, you will pick up knowledge both relevant to your course and outside its remit. This may include tips on future employment and contacts.

Cardiff is a great city to be a student but I would probably advise going further afield if you really want to grow as a person. I went to Cardiff Uni (a long time ago!!) and don't regret a minute of it, but my
Parents were living outside Cardiff at the time so I got the full benefit of student life. Since then I have been a tax paying fully employed citizen. (Don't take any notice of the banter about students!!)

The best university is the university of life. Don't waste your time going to university because you are highly likely not to get anything out if it

Re: University advice....

Thu Mar 12, 2015 9:45 pm

Or it could be the best three years of your life.

Don't bother if you're studying English, History, or Geography etc, you'll spend the next 30 years in a bookshop.

Not true. You are far more likely to get a job which is secure and well-paid if you have a degree. The University of life can be studied at as a post graduate.

Many people who decry higher education either didn't attend or achieve it, or better still know a bloke who has 3 degrees and a masters bug still can't tie his shoelaces. Nonsense!!

Go to uni if you can!!!

Bar work is always an option and if the pub is close to the college, they are more likely to need you as a boost to the normal staffing levels during term, but only too happy to let you go at the end of term.

Companies like McDonald's encourage undergraduates, pay well and allow you to be flexible with your working hours. You can also move from one restaurant to the other if you want you to work during the vacation.

Is true. The amount of university educated people who end up with a basic admin job is incredible because there's too many graduates for too few graduate jobs in this country. So much so that employers are more interested on your life experience more than anything else these days
