Cardiff City boss Russell Slade criticises Sean Morrison for penalty shocker as Bluebirds beat themselves
Russell Slade claimed Cardiff were mugged of the chance of first back-to-back victories in four months – and hit out at Sean Morrison for needlessly blowing it for the Bluebirds.
Cardiff had been coasting to victory over Charlton after Federico Macheda's 56th minute opener, only for sloppy defending to gift the the visitors a lifeline when Tony Watt levelled with 16 minutes remaining.
And with home fans angered enough at seeing their side chuck away another lead under Slade, centre-back Morrison tripped Wales striker Simon Church to win the penalty that answered Addicks' prayers.
Yoni Buyens tucked home the 87th minute spot-kick and Slade said: “It's frustrating to say the least. We dominated for 75% of the game, got ourselves in front and should have put the three points to bed.
“Charlton weren't coming back into the game but we failed to get tight, failed to stop the cross and failed to cleat the danger.
“And then it's a penalty and it's not necessary – the player has his back to goal, he's going nowhere and you can't do it.
“It's a kick in the teeth and we have got to manage games better because we ended up mugged a little bit today.”
Cardiff had looked improved in their style of play, if without creating a plethora of chances, and should have taken fuller advantage of a seemingly disinterested Charlton side.
But a loss of concentration and a surge from the South Londoners ensured they paid the penalty meaning it is now six games at Cardiff City Stadium without success.
Slade said: “There was improvements and I do think we're getting better and keeping the ball better.
“But we didn't create any real fantastic openings and chances to put the opposition to bed when the onus is on us as the home side.
“I do think we have been doing more but we know it's all about results. The top sides in the league they do what they good at for 90 minutes and for us to be successful we have to do that, not for 45 or 75 minutes.”
Aron Gunnarsson was replaced in the first-half after taking a knee to the lower back but should be in contention for next week's trip to promotion-chasing Brentford. Slade explained Peter Whittingham had received treatment for stitches in his lip after he went off for a period in the second-half, a spell where Slade accepted Charlton found the momentum that eventually led to their equaliser.

Rubbish lads.
We were comfortable until Whitts got injured.
The mistake Slade made was not subbing him immediately.
We completely lost our shape for the 3-4 mins he was off and the pressure they gained from this led to their goal.
Prior to that they had only one weak effort on goal.
Even then we outshot them something like 18-5 and deserved to win overall.
Don't let your constant need to slag Slade off cloud you judgement.

You are preaching to the blind as only certain people saw the facts you just described! All the others believe Charlton deserved their win?

Exactly - that long spell with Whitts off gave CA the impetus - Slade you are a fool

yes idealy he should have sub him there and then as we didnt need him for rest game anyway as in control! going down to ten men gave them opportunity to pressure us we never got back into game after that

He picked 2 striker who can't last 70 mins and be effective......That's why he didn't sub Whitts.

Is there such a thing as a " Self Mugging ? " Cos if there is, this was a perfect example of it !
We, I mean HE, literally gave the three points to a very ordinary Charlton side due to his indecision from the touchline.
Managers live or die by their decisions, but one decision I struggle to come to terms with was bringing on Alex Ravell in front of Eoian Doyle for that goal scoring "Statue" Macheda, when we were at 1-1 and chasing the game for a winner.
Now I might be from a different planet, but no matter how hard he works or how many miles he runs during a game, Alex Ravell has scored a total of 5 goals this season and doesn't look like he's ever going to add to that, whereas Eoian Doyle has scored 25 and looks far more likely to add to his tally than Ravell does. But Doyle didn't play for one of Russell Slades previous clubs though did he ?
And as for the people who defended Russell's team selection yesterday as they reckoned we were rubbish and lucky the other night against Rotherham, how about this from a Rotherham point of view....
" Cardiff were forced to change goalkeepers at the interval, with Simon Moore coming on for David Marshall, but such was the Millers' lack of cutting edge they failed to even force him into a save until the 76th minute.
Instead it was the Bluebirds who looked the likeliest to add to their lead, with home goalkeeper Adam Collin producing a fine double save to deny Aaron Gunnarsson and then Alex Revell. Moore finally got his hands warm 14 minutes from time when he palmed away Adam Hamill's wicked drive, with Manga clearing the rebound off the line. The Millers finally had something to cheer when Ward headed home Hammill's cross five minutes later but there was no great comeback. "

If we were mugged, perhaps Slade should be done for aiding and abetting, with some of the decisions he made.

Manager calls on Bluebirds to be more clinical
A disappointed Russell Slade spoke to the press and media after his Cardiff City side slipped to a 2-1 home defeat to Charlton Athletic.
The Bluebirds had performed well for large spells against the Addicks and went ahead through Kiko Macheda’s strike. However, Tony Watt’s finish and a late Yoni Buyens penalty stole the points for the visitors, leaving Slade frustrated.
“We dominated 75% of the game so it is a little bit frustrating to say the least,” said the Boss. “We’ve just got to learn to manage the game for the entire ninety minutes.
“We got ourselves into a position where we were in front, having dominated large periods of the match. From there, we should have put the three points to bed in all honesty.
“The top sides in the league, the top six, do what they’re good at for ninety minutes. For us to be successful in this league we’ve got to being doing the same thing. We are definitely doing it for longer periods now, as we did midweek away to Rotherham and for most of the match today, but it has to be 100% for the entire game.”
