Cardiff City defender Sean Morrison challenges the Bluebirds to reach the play-offs

viewtopic.php?f=2&t=155633

Sat 7 March 2015

By Terry Phillips

The former Reading defender is taking inspiration from his old club who went on a remarkable run in 2012 to secure promotion to the top flight

Bluebirds defender Sean Morrison has challenged Cardiff City to launch a Reading-style push for the Premier League in their remaining 11 Championship games this season.

The centre-back was at Reading when the Royals strung together an amazing run of 17 wins in 23 matches to clinch the Championship title in 2012 after being in 23rd spot at one stage of the season.

And Morrison, ahead of today’s clash with Charlton at the Cardiff City Stadium, is adamant the Bluebirds can rejoin the Premier League via the Championship play-offs despite a stuttering season under boss Russell Slade.

“An average of 75 points will take a team into the play-offs and if we win every game we’ll have more than that,” said Morrison as the Bluebirds strive for back-to-back Championship wins against the Addicks having beaten Rotherham away in midweek.

“Cardiff have 11 games to go and we’ll be out to keep as many clean sheets as possible.

“That’s what we aim for. I’m not saying we are going to be promoted, but we want to finish as high as we possibly can. If we fall short we'll take all the positives into next season."

viewtopic.php?f=2&t=155633 :thumbright:

Morrison added: “Our job is to finish on a high and get a good base for 2015-16. It’s been an up and down season, but we are making progress and must continue that.

“As a professional footballer we want to earn automatic promotion, but that’s out of our reach.

“Yes, 11 wins is a big ask, but I’ve seen a run like that happen. When I signed for Reading they went on a crazy run and finished top.

“They had more games to go than we have when that started. We’ll keep going and see what we can achieve.

“I am certainly not going to sit here with 11 fixtures left and say we will settle for a top-half finish. We want top six and will do all we can to get there.

“Reading were in a worse position than we are now when they started their run. With momentum and belief who knows what is possible.

“We will just go for it and do everything we can.

“The situation is different this season, of course, and the league has changed.

“But if we tick off Charlton and earn the three points, we’ll move on.”

As much as I would love to see it happen,I think he's living in cloud cuckoo land . I would be amazed if we won 5 more games never mind 11.

You don't honestly think he believes it?
Just saying what he thinks he should to the press, otherwise he'll be accused of giving up next.

Do you mean the second team of players, that you and a lot of our other fans said should be in our first team and that we shouldn't have got rid of?

I'm all for positivity and it's nice to see that the team want to finish as high as possible. I was underwhelmed by the appointment of Russell Slade but wanted him to do well. If he gets 7 or 8 wins out of the team in the rest of the season then he is worth a shot again next season.

It is noticeable than since the transfer window closed and Trollope was appointed the team is much improved. Maybe the rest of the season is what we should judge him on, rather than the previous difficult and unsettling time when he was doing the job.

Yeah. but what you and many other posters have failed to notice, is that the team was improving before Trollope came on board and that it was Slade who appointed him, so if the team have improved further under Trollope, then the credit should go to Slade!

Too late I think but a good run would get confidence for next season

I would rather him say that than - 'Season over, roll on May. Cant wait for my three weeks at Trecco Bay butt.'

He has to say something I suppose but in reality this season was over b4 it started

The worry is, season ticket sales will be at an all time low

I think most people will agree with you Wez, but I also think that we'd all be pretty miffed if our players or management team came out and said that the season was over and that they've got nothing to play for!

I have to make a near 200 mile round trip to get to every home game, as well as the many away games I travel to as well and I want to see them fighting for every available point!

I really wish the club stop coming out with stupid statements.

Besides making themselves look stupid it makes us supporters look stupid as well for supporting them.

It is not being positive it is being stupid.

I am not being negative, I'm just being realistic.

Yes but my opinions don't make me look stupid when you look at where we are now.

Think you and a lot of people are taking the statement too serious!

Yes, it's extremely unlikely that we're going to get anywhere near the play offs, but Sunderland were right at the bottom of the leageu about Xmas time 8 or so years ago and they ended up winning the league!

It is one thing being positive and another to be deluded.
If Slade wants to give his team a relevant target, then 7 clean sheets out of 11 games would be a good start.

Perhaps so but there comes a time where it just becomes plain stupid to say things.

Xmas...went to my supermarket yesterday and they have Easter eggs up on the shelves.

Had it been Xmas time now, perhaps Morrison would have said we could win the league and really embarrass you!
