Scott Young Talks about Peter Whittingham

Peter Whittingham takes flak at times. Is that fair?

Scott Young: "Whitts is a top player and has been for a long time.

The criticism he takes is too strong, but he bears the brunt of it and gets on with his game.

He would walk into most Championship teams.

Peter is a laid back guy, but this football club means a lot to him.

He wants to play well. He shows that in training every day.

But Joe Ralls would be disappointed if he is left out.

Every time he has been selected, Joe has done a fabulous job."

" Will Peter Whittingham return? "

Scott Young: 'It's a great headache for gaffer and coaching staff to have.

'Competition after a strong result is exactly what we want.

'But he's not irreplacable.

'Joe Ralls stepped in and did a great job. We will asses the situation today and make a decision.'

Whitts has always been an easy target for some of our fans, as I have said before he cost us about £350k and what service we have had for that. If we had to buy another player like him now what would it have cost. He scores goals, takes penalties, hits a good dead ball, keeps possession and does far more chasing and tackling than he is given credit for. He loves it here in wales, loves the club and deserves our respect and a testimonial for loyal service. :ayatollah: :bluescarf:

I like Whitts always have...but he has not played well for months now.

Hopefully a few weeks on the bench and he will come back fresher and more like his old self

Whittingham is past his sell by date and does not dominate the midfield, nor does he create enough chances for our strikers to warrant a place in the side.

The stats for possession are shocking and must be the worst or close to it in this division and much of that is because of a weak midfield. He's been a good servant, but his best days are behind him.

I went out on the lash with Whittingham and a few others. He is a great bloke and a professional. I told him he'll always be a Cardiff City legend no matter what and he responded extremely humbly and he then went on alongside Hudson that season and took us up! The guy is a pure class act. Fans abusing him are fickle, go purely on a game by game basis and are just deluded, quite frankly. He's stepped up numerous times when others haven't and players like Ralls look up to him because of not only his loyalty but his service. Everyone has bad games here and there, Gerrard, Scholes, heck even Toure got played off the park by Coutinho the other day so it happens to the best of them. Any fan that jumps on a back of a player on one or a few performances is an absolute idiot and is doing more harm than good. GET BEHIND YOUR PLAYERS!!!

No doubt about it that he has been an outstanding loyal player as far as this club is concerned. There is also no doubt that he hasn't always been in the best of form this season, and it's difficult to tell if that is down to the formation and how he is used, or if he is just not on his game at the moment. Age is slowly creeping up on him, but hopefully he has another two or three years in him yet. Looking at his recent performances, it may do more good than harm to rest him for a while, and see how we perform without his influence in the middle of the park. I would be surprised if he is brought back in for the Charlton game given what happened at Rotherham on Tuesday.

People are entrenched in their views and their opinions on their "heroes". Often no amount of objective proof will sway their opinion. They have their own agenda. I have no doubt there is a certain camp which is praying for Joe Ralls to fail on Saturday. I hope and expect he will silence them!

Ralls deserves his place in the side on merit. Does that justify the flak Whittingham is receiving? No. Get behind every player in the team and push them to do their best. These players often have enough battles internally doubting themselves. Football is as much a mental battle as it is a physical one. The last thing some of them need is fans getting on their case too.

Ralls certainly does deserve his place...he should have been a regular long ago. Im sorry but I cant see where Whittingham is getting any flak. Some people, including myself are critiquing the situation and saying he should have been replaced long ago because his performance is poor. Thats not giving flak. Hes a nice guy, Ive met him, I wouldnt suppirt anyone abusing him, and why should they? This is the nature of sport, people have opinions and they have every right to express them. I keep on reminding people we are not talking about religious deities here, we are talking about professional sportsmen on hyper inflated salaries.
