Cardiff City boss Russell Slade to consider leaving out Peter Whittingham for the first time this season

The midfielder will be available after suspension this weekend and would make his 300th league start for the Bluebirds if he was selected

Russell Slade could be set to deny Peter Whittingham the chance of making his 300th league start for Cardiff City as he considers leaving the midfielder out of his team for the first time this season against Charlton.

Slade is likely to resist the temptation to recall Whitngham to the side as he returns from the one-match suspension that ruled him out of the 3-1 win at Rotherham in midweek.

Until that enforced absence, Whititngham had played every minute of the Bluebirds’ league campaign despite a series of indifferent performances.

Manager Slade says he was ‘thrilled’ with replacement Joe Ralls at Rotherham, and the 21-year-old has a good chance of starting alongside Aron Gunnarsson through the middle.

Long-serving Whittingham, who joined City in 2007, would be in line to reach a remarkable milestone, but Slade looks likely to keep faith largely with the team who delivered the club’s best performance of the season at the New York Stadium.

Slade has refused to be drawn on his starting XI for the game against Charlton but the feeling is Whittingham will miss out.

Slade clearly has a lot of faith in the versatile Ralls, who was outstanding at left-back during the 1-0 win at Wigan and shone in midfield at Rotherham.

“Joe has certainly given me food for thought and he certainly gives me an option,” said the Bluebirds boss.

“He has put a marker down. We were thrilled with his performance at the New York Stadium in midweek.

“We are starting to get competition for places and that’s what we want. Joe was given his chance in midfield and took it. That’s what we want from every player when they are in the matchday squad.”

City have lost only once in their last seven fixtures and have earned victories in two of their last three games.

But they have only won at home once in 2015, against Fulham in January, and are intent on putting on a big performance for home fans.

“The supporters want to see us having a go and that’s exactly what we want as well,” said Slade. “Charlton are in form and are dangerous opposition, but we are at home and we know how much everybody would love a victory.

If he does this, and I'm not holding my breath, I will give Slade a massive show of respect. He might not be the brightest light on the planet but if he sees this obvious situation and acts accordingly I will say hes learning fast. And, to be fair, anything is possible after that. If he does what he needs to do then maybe we have s more promising future!

give Ralls 5 games, he needs to be given the freedom to make mistakes trying to create and not just playing the safe sideways passes

Agree! Lets have Gunnarsson, Ralls and Adeyemi in midfield. It could dramatically improve our possession stats,

Trying to work out how you agree with him, when he's advocating the dropping of Gunnersson and you want him to play alongside Adeyeyemi and Ralls! :)

Yes I see your point Moonie lol! I actually tried to ignore the Gunnarsson comment because I thought who in their right mind would want our Captain Fantastic dropped! So, really I have half agreed with him. You were right to point out my disingenuity. However, I do believe a Gunnarsson, Ralls, Adeyemi axis would bring big rewards.

:) Personally I'd prefer to stick with only 2 defensive midfielders and continue with Gunnarsson, possibly Ralls, but definitely Kennedy and McAleny!

Marshalls captain not Gunner ?
I honestly think Adeyemi will bring a lot more to the side than Gunnerson if given a chance

Just had a rethink about your post and was wondering whether you meant to play Gunnarsson, Ralls & Adeyemi in the middle of a 5 man midfield, which I'd be happy with, but this would obviously mean that there's only going to be room for one upfront, leaving a lot of disgruntled forwards!

Waste of an armband giving it to a goalie in my opinion!

Yes thats exactly what I mean Moonie.

My team would be (with Marshall possibly out)

Moore
Peltier
Manga
Morrisson
Fabio (wishful thinking I know)
Gunnarsson
Ralls
Adeyemi
Kennedy
Doyle
Macheda

With Jones and McAleny on bench plenty of options to change if necessary.

Btw I thought Gunnar might be captain in Marshy's absence. But if hes not he should be. I think hed make a great motivator. :bluescarf:

Sorry Moonie I misread your earlier post. Yes I would agree with a midfield 5 of McAleny, Gunnarsson, Ralls, Adeyemi and Kennedy. It does leave us light up front but there would be options on the bench to change tactics later if needed. It makes it a little more difficult to choose the lone striker but I might start with Macheda only to reward his performance Tuesday. Im ooen to suggestions though!
