Cardiff City boss Russell Slade says if the Bluebirds 'win one more will follow'

Sunday 22nd 2015

By Terry Phillips

Slade's men haven't won a game since January 10, which is their only win in their last 13 League games, but the manager believes that when they crack it the floodgates will open

Russell Slade is adamant his Cardiff City team are on the rise, saying: "If we earn one win more will follow."

The Bluebirds are unbeaten in four Championship matches, but all have ended in draws and Slade's men are desperate for a win to lift them up the table.

They are without a win for seven matches in all competitions, they travel to play Malky Mackay's Wigan Athletic on Tuesday intent on gaining the three points they need.

Slade, though, insists that there won't be any extra pressure because ex-City boss Mackay is the man in charge of relegated haunted Wigan.

Slade and his entire coaching staff watched Wigan crash 3-0 at home against Charlton on Friday evening, while he says: "I don't think we will be distracted because Malky Mackay is Wigan manager.

"It's about being focused and ready. We are professional people and we are intent on winning a difficult away match.

"Our job is to do everything we can to win and hopefully that will help us get a run going. We are making lift difficult for the opposition right now and staying strong at the back, but we must get the win we need."

City were disrupted by the loss of Scott Malone with a hamstring injury midway through the first half. Lee Peltier switched to the left with substutute Matt Connolly going on at right-back.

"Lee did really well at left-back," said Slade. "The loss of Malone might have caused us a problem, but we still looked solid at the back. There is a composure, we don't panic when things don't go our way.

"There is an honesty and a good attitude about the performances.

"We got in some good crosses and had chances. Overall, it was frustrating we could not come away with three points.

"Huddersfield's goalkeeper (Alex Smithies) did well to keep Eoin Doyle's header out. He threw up an arm and somehow stopped it.

"The goals aren't coming for us, but if we keep playing the way we are then the wins will come.

"I felt positive going into this match and I'll feel positive before the Wigan match. We are making progress."

City are likely to stick with Connolly and Peltier as their full-backs even though Fabio is almost fit again after injury.

"Fabio and Federico Macheda could be back in the group for our match at Wigan," said Slade. "It's going to be close, but they have made good progress from their injuries."

25 points out of 66 available since he took charge and we continue to drop down the table, only Uncle Fester could think that represents the form of a team "On the rise".

The last time Wigan won a home game was 30th August and I bet they just cannot wait for Slade and his boring, sterile, unimaginative and ineffective football to arrive on Tuesday evening.

How much more bullshit can one man come up with.

I'd rather have Solskjaer than him at the moment, and Solskjaer wasn't great either.

Guarantee the win on 30th August will all be forgotten Tuesday as they beat us. Everyone knows how we like to end other teams bad runs :(

What I am taking from this kind of talk is that the expectations of the Club have hit new lows.

Even I was pleased with the home draw to Blackburn going home from the game. Looking back though, they managed to concede a goal at the death with not one City player trying to disrupt the flow of the game. Not one 'cramp victim,' etc. it really is a shambles down there when the fan expectations have plummeted to this level.

The problem with the players not knowing how to kill a game off (cramp victim, shoe laces) etc is because we are not normally 1 up with 5 mins left on the clock :laughing6:

Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha f**king ridiculous comments from our fans again. 4 games unbeaten and apparently he's wrong for saying we're on the rise. Do u expect the manager to come out and say 'we've gone 4 games unbeaten so we're plummeting and I want to ruin the players confidence further by saying that'

Our fans will never give him any credit. Like bullies surrounding a victim. This is manager of OUR football club we are talking a out u morons. We all stick together when times are hard.

Remind me how many points we've picked up since we played Fulham at home out of points available?

From bookies favourites for promotion, one of the biggest transfer budgets in Championship history, to fans settling for 1 win in 13  I respect the fans who will not criticise the club, but I cannot do that, I have to be true to my personality and what I expected from this season

I'd love to see how other managers perform in the championship if they had to cut 12 million off the wage bill. It's ridiculous for anyone to think things would improve after that. We have to rebuild end of. It's not Slades fault we were favourites at the start of the season. We certainly weren't favourites by the time he got here and probably still weren't when he won his first 2 games.

We are currently in a run of the reverse fixtures from August and September with Wigan and Wolves to complete our opening 10 fixtures. All of these games took place before VT appointed Uncle Fester as OUR manager.

Of the 8 teams we have played in the original 10 fixtures back then we collected 10 points from those games, scoring 10 goals and conceding 13 goals. In the 8 reverse fixtures so far we have taken 7 points, scoring 6 goals and conceding 10.

So IF we win our next 2 games it will mean we will have collected the same number of points which resulted in OGS losing his job.

Which ever way you look at it WE are not "On the rise" as RS claims but are falling further into trouble with every game that passes. In my opinion the question is "If OGS had a better record in those 8 games and lost his job why should RS keep his?"

Nothing moronic in that question.

I don't get where Slade says we are on the rise???
We are not a 'footballing' team just a Division Four style of play now all the Talent has left and yet the article states he MAY keep the full backs that finished the Huddersfield game :? :? In Slade's own words....
“Scott Malone has been improving with every performance - [First Team Coach] James Rowberry is doing a lot of one-on-one work with him. If he [Malone] improves the defensive side of his game, I think we’ve got an excellent player.
But haven't we already have the exact same players as he is describing in Fabio and John!!!!!! So IF Malone and Fabio are injured on Tuesday surely Declan John should be the left back instead of Slade constantly ignoring his RAW talent in favor of right backs all the time :o :o :o
Let's hope Trollope can see what we can see and starts to get the right players out on the pitch for their ability not because they have cheaper 'win' bonuses.

OOPS SORRY WE WOULD HAVE TO WIN A GAME

Whether we are on the rise or not, depends on how the facts and stats are manipulated/interpreted!

The fact of the matter, is that we were playing crap and conceding too many goals under OGS and until the last few games, we were playing crap and conceding too many goals under Slade as well!

We can argue all day long about whether Slade should have used some of the players that weren't used by OGS like Guerra for example, but people are forgetting that Slade had to generally use the same group of players which OGS failed with and had to wait until January to be able to bring in some players, which he obviously believe fit his team and work ethic!

Whether Slade is the right man for the job or not, should be judged over the remainder of the season IMO, as he has had to massively prune the playing squad and has only over the past few weeks managed to bring in some of his own players!

These players have mainly all done well IMO and whilst we are still not playing the type of football to consistently get some of our fans out of their seats, we appear to have stopped the rot of conceding a glut of goals every game!

Hopefully we can now start to put a run of consistent positive performances in, like we did against Blackburn last week!

In what possible way are we "on the rise"?

Slade is absolutely deluded if he honestly feels that is the case as there is no evidence of that shown by the football on the pitch at the moment.

Obviously saying such bollocks to try to save his job but so patently incapable of managing a team in this division it's unbelievable.

Should never have been appointed, and should be replaced as soon as possible.
