Huddersfield Town A.F.C. is an English football club in Huddersfield, West Yorkshire. Huddersfield Town have played the majority of their history in the top two tiers of English football and currently (2014–15) play in the Football League Championship.

In 1926, Huddersfield became the first English club to win three successive league titles, a feat which only three other clubs have matched, and none has bettered. They also won the FA Cup in 1922.

Nicknamed The Terriers, the club plays in blue and white vertically striped shirts and white shorts. They have played home games at the John Smith's Stadium since 1994. The stadium replaced Leeds Road, Huddersfield Town's home since 1908.

John Smith's Stadium

Key facts

Club: Huddersfield Town FC
Opening: 1994
Capacity: 24,554 seats

History and description

John Smith’s Stadium was one of the first modern-era stadiums to be built in England. It replaced Huddersfield’s old Leeds Road.

Construction of the stadium started in 1992, and when two new stands were finished in the summer of 1994, Huddersfield moved into their new home. The stands at both ends were completed in late 1994 and 1998.

The stadium was initially called Alfred McAlpine Stadium, but changed names in 2004 to Galpharm Stadium following a new sponsorship deal. The stadium has been called John Smith’s Stadium since the summer of 2012 after a new sponsorship deal was agreed with brewer Heineken.

Former Cardiff City captain Mark Hudson is shocked the Bluebirds are not challenging for promotion to the Premier League.

Hudson leads his current club Huddersfield Town into battle against Cardiff on Saturday in a showdown the two sides need to win.

Russell Slade’s Bluebirds are 15th in the Championship table, one place and one point behind Hudson’s Huddersfield.

And Hudson admits: “I would probably expect Cardiff to be a lot higher up the table. But there are a lot of big teams in this league.

“I really enjoyed my time there, have fond memories and wish them the best.

“But, of course, I want to beat Cardiff at our stadium.”

Huddersfield Town manager Chris Powell hints at return for striker Nahki Wells against Cardiff City

20 February 2015 By Doug Thomson

The 11-goal top scorer is keen to bounce back after a frustrating spell

Nahki Wells has endured a frustrating few weeks at Huddersfield Town

Chris Powell has ruled centre-back Joel Lynch out of Huddersfield Town’s home double-header against Cardiff City and Reading.

But the boss suggested 11-goal top scorer Nahki Wells is in line for a recall against the South Wales side on Saturday (the Royals visit next Tuesday).

Lynch has missed the last three Championship games after picking up a groin injury during the 2-1 home derby defeat by Leeds United.

Striker Wells was sent off during the 3-1 win at Millwall, suspended for the 4-1 home defeat by Wolves and an unused substitute for the 1-1 draw at Bournemouth.

“It’s been a strange spell for Nahki,” said Powell, who also has powerful frontman Ishmael Miller to call upon.

“He picked up an injury early on against Leeds in the game before his red card, so it’s been frustrating for him of late.

“He’s trained really well this week, and he’s champing at the bit to get involved again.

“Nahki’s my top scorer, and it’s fair to say he’ll be on the pitch more often than not.”

Powell said of Cardiff: “They are a good club and have good players, many of whom have been in the Premier League.

“(Manager) Russell Slade, a man I know well from when I was at Charlton and he was at Orient, is still making changes and finding his optimum group of players.”

Town’s Under 21 game against Coventry City at the Ricoh Arena yesterday was postponed because of a waterlogged pitch.

MARK HUDSON is adamant he has nothing to prove today against former club Cardiff City.

The Huddersfield Town captain spent five years with the Bluebirds before moving to Yorkshire shortly before the summer transfer window closed last year.

He made 165 appearances for Cardiff and was part of the side that brought Premier League football to the Welsh capital for the first time. Hudson also played in the 2010 Championship play-off final and the League Cup final two years later.

“I do wish them (Cardiff) all the best because I enjoyed my time there,” said Hudson. “But my main focus is to see Huddersfield do as well as we can. I don’t have a point to prove (today).”

Hudson quickly became a mainstay of the Terriers’ defence following his arrival on September 1. His debut followed 13 days later at home to Middlesbrough and the 32-year-old has since gone on to start 27 consecutive games for Town.

“I am really enjoying it,” said Hudson of his move. “My family is settled up here, which is a big thing for me. I really wanted my kids and wife to be here with me day-to-day so I can be involved in their lives.

“I am also really enjoying leading this team as captain. It is a different experience for me to lead a young side, day-to-day.

“But I am really enjoying working with them and, hopefully, they’re bringing the best out of me as well. I am still learning things every day at nearly 33.”

On being a regular at Town after making just two appearances in the Premier League, Hudson added: “I am playing week-in, week-out and, barring a few results, I think we have done well.

“We are a young side. It is a learning curve for us, but, hopefully, we are on the up on that curve. I think we grew up as a group in the 1-1 draw at Bournemouth last Saturday.”

Chris Powell wants his side to break into the top half of the Sky Bet Championship, but knows it won’t be easy when Cardiff City visits the John Smith’s Stadium on Saturday.

Town’s team comes into the game with four wins, two draws and three losses starting with the 2-2 draw at Rotherham United on Boxing Day; a record that Powell reflected on at Thursday’s press conference.

“It’s been ok. We’ve looked at it ourselves and every time we’ve had a setback we’ve answered it, which is good on our part.

“From the last eight games, if we’re talking strictly about the Championship, we have four wins; Bolton, Watford, Millwall and Wigan. That also includes two home defeats against Wolves and Leeds, but we’ve been in both games.

“We go into Saturday after an uplifting draw at Bournemouth, especially on the back of a home defeat. I thought my players were very good on the day; they all had a role to play and they played it.”

Just as Town’s record on the road has improved, the home form has dipped – with successive defeats against Leeds United and Wolves.

Powell continued: “It’s been funny really 2015, as things have turned on their head. Our home form has wavered a bit but our away form has picked up. We’ve still got room for improvement, like 20 of the teams in the league. The Championship is tight; it’s going to chop and change all the way till the end of the season.

“Blips are part of being in the Championship; every team that’s in it knows that even the sides that are supposedly running away with it have the blips.

“We’ve analysed the Leeds game and we shouldn’t have lost, especially with the chances we created. Wolves could have been 7-7 - it’s bizarre when you look back - but that’s the Championship. Wolves hadn’t won away for a while and then they come away with a 4-1 win that I’m sure Kenny Jackett didn’t expect.

“I doubt people, apart from those that support Huddersfield, would’ve felt we would get something from Bournemouth, especially on the back of their terrific home form. We got our tactics right, we went out there and displayed exactly what I was looking for.”

Powell is now targeting a run of results that will see the Terriers break into the top half of the table for the first time this season.

“We can see that Birmingham City is in the top half, a single point above us. We want to do our best to keep looking up, but we have to keep looking over our shoulders and do your best to pull away from the bottom three.”

Ahead of Saturday’s game against the Bluebirds, Powell is pleased with the strength of his options:

“The lads know we have players not involved in the team that have played at this level. They know they have got to perform, because there are others who are ready to play and do the business at this level.

“Nahki Wells was on the bench last weekend; he has had a stop-start last three games. He’s my top goal scorer and more often than not he will be on the pitch, starting and getting goals for us to win games.”

Another player pushing for a start is Ishmael Miller, who made an impressive late appearance as a substitute last weekend:

Chris continued: “He had small cameo roles against Bournemouth and Millwall but he got 90 minutes against Wolves, which I think was important.

“We’ve had a look at his clips and there’s a lot of good things in there. I think he’s showed even in the 10-15 minutes he was involved last week against Bournemouth exactly what he was about; he could have won us the game with a bit of skill and pace that he displayed.

“I’m really pleased with him and he’s fitting in really well. The boys have taken to him. I feel it’s also pushed Nahki Wells and James Vaughan on as I’ve got three good strikers and I’m really pleased with that. I’m sure Ishmael will have a big part to play and hopefully bring some goals to the table as well.”

One man who won’t feature against Cardiff is injured Wales international Joel Lynch, as Chris explained:

“He won’t be available for Cardiff or Reading. He has an outside chance for Charlton, but we will see how he reacts and his training goes. He’s the only one in the treatment room, so that bodes well and I want that to continue.

“We will have to make sure we look after the players because the games in the next two weeks are coming thick and fast.”

On Saturday’s opponent Cardiff, Chris said:

“They are a point behind us. They got points on the board early on, so when they do have the blips it helps you when the results aren’t to your liking.

“Cardiff is a good football club, but they’ve had change and Russell Slade has come in. He has to get used to the Championship - and I’m sure he will.

“They’re amongst a cluster of teams that will feel they need two or three results to move away from the bottom half of the table into the top half. They’ve got some players that have played at a Premier League level and they do have their strengths. Russell is making a few changes as well; some forced and some unforced.”

Cardiff City distracted by 'behind the scenes' action - Mark Hudson

BBC

Friday 20th Feb 2015

Former Cardiff City captain Mark Hudson believes the club are hampered by things going on "behind the scenes" and will continue to be for some time yet.

The Huddersfield Town defender, 32, left the Welsh club in September after a five-year spell with the Bluebirds.
On Saturday he faces his former employers for the first time, but says he has nothing to prove since leaving in September.
"I don't have a point to prove," said Hudson.
The Bluebirds bought Hudson, 32, from Charlton in 2009 and he went on to make 165 appearances for the Welsh club.
During his time at the club, Cardiff reached a Championship play-off final, a League Cup final and before securing promotion to the Premier League for the first time as Championship winners in 2013.
But after relegation last year the club are onto their second manager of the season and are closer to the relegation zone than the play-offs and an immediate return to the top flight.

Mark Hudson signed for Huddersfield Town on a two-year contract in September 2014
Hudson said: "It's a tough place [Cardiff]. I feel sorry for the players and the fans because there's lots going on.
"All the time there seems to be something going on behind the scenes which is a distraction for the playing staff and everyone involved with the club wanting to do well.
"So that's their problem and I think that's going to be something that carries on for a little while."
Huddersfield are one point and one place above Cardiff in 14th place in the Championship.
Hudson told Sport Wales that he hopes to get a good reception from the Cardiff fans on Saturday and holds the club "close to his heart."
The former Fulham and Charlton centre-back also revealed his frustration behind his exit from the club in the summer saying the goalposts "moved a few times in pre season" under then manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
The Bluebirds travel to Yorkshire in a bid to end a run of seven games without a win and despite his fondness for his former club Hudson hopes their poor run continues on Saturday.
"I do wish them [Cardiff] all the best because I enjoyed my time there," said Hudson.
"But my main focus is to see Huddersfield do as well as we can."
Watch Sport Wales every Friday on BBC Two Wales, and iPlayer for seven days after transmission.

Huddersfield Town manager Chris Powell backs James Vaughan to carry on scoring as Cardiff City clash looms

21 February 2015

By Doug Thomson

The 26-year-old striker has shrugged off a facial injury to notched five goals in 10 starts since returning from a calf problem

James Vaughan has received the backing of his manager Chris Powell after three goals in as many games

Chris Powell is backing James Vaughan to build on his half-century as Huddersfield Town prepare to tackle Cardiff City.

The in-form striker, still wearing a mask to protect a facial injury sustained last month, has hit three goals in as many games.

That has taken the 26-year-old’s career haul to 50 – and his upbeat manager believes there are plenty more to come.

Vaughan has netted 31 times for Town, nine for Crystal Palace, one for Leicester City and nine for his first club Everton.

There have been five goals in 10 starts since the £600,000 buy from Norwich City returned from a calf injury late last year.
