Off to Madrid in May for the last game week of the Spanish season, watching Atletico Madrid v Barcelona. Anybody got any suggestions on what to do there other than the game?

I can recommend going to El Palacio Real and the Prado Museum and if you have time the Monasterio de las Descalzas Reales ( full of art and treasure). In the night you can't beat the tapas bars. Just follow the crowd when you find a packed one and order the same dish, as the locals know which bar does the best tortilla etc. I can also recommend El Botin (established 1725) the oldest restaurant still running in the world which can be found near the Plaza Mayor. I avoided the big queue by asking to look at the wine list, then asking If I could order a bottle of good wine to drink at the bar while waiting for a table ( La Rioja Alta 904 1997 for about £30 which was cheaper than I could buy here, unless a member of The Wine Society). Even the station Estacion de Atocha is worth a quick look as it has a glass house with tropical plants from the 1880's. I hope this helps wet your appetite.
