Cardiff City have appointed Paul Trollope - giving the 42-year-old the title of head coach in Russell Slade’s backroom team.

Playing days
Trollope - who operated as a midfielder or left-back - began his career as a trainee with Swindon but failed to make an appearance before moving to Torquay United.

After impressing in 106 league appearances he earned a £100,000 switch to Derby County in 1995, with the Rams winning promotion to the Premier League under Jim Smith in the following 1995/6 season.

At the start of their top flight campaign, Trollope was loaned to Grimsby and Crystal Palace before coming back into the fold to make 14 Premier League appearances as County finished 12th.

He was part of Fulham’s climb up the Football League under the likes of Kevin Keegan and Jean Tigana between 1997 and 2002 after a £600,000 move and had other notable spells at Northampton Town (2002-2004) and Bristol Rovers (2004-2007).

Trollope also won nine Wales caps between 1997 and 2003.

:ayatollah: Management break :ayatollah:

Trollope was just 33 and in only his second season with Bristol Rovers in 2005 when he was handed the managerial reins on a caretaker basis following the departure of Ian Atkins. Later, he was installed as first-team coach working in a two-tier management system with ex-Cardiff City boss Lennie Lawrence the Director of Football.

In his first year, he led the Gasheads to 12th in League Two after hovering above danger when he took over. The following campaign they were promoted to League One via the play-offs and reached the final of the Football League Trophy, eventually losing to Doncaster Rovers in extra-time.

Trollope consolidated his side at the higher level over the next two campaigns and, in 2008, the club reached the quarter-finals of the FA Cup for the first time in 50 years before defeat to West Brom.

He remained with Rovers until December 2010 - when he was placed on gardening leave with the club sitting in the League One drop zone.

Trollope was appointed first-team coach at Birmingham City for the 2011/12 season and, with Chris Hughton in charge, helped the side to a fourth-placed finish.

He followed Hughton to Norwich where they finished 11th in the 2012/13 Premier League before leaving five games before the end of last season before their eventual relegation under Neil Adams.

:ayatollah: Coaching and managerial philosophy? :ayatollah:

Trollope cites Frenchman Tigana’s easy-on-the-eye 2000/1 Fulham team he played in as one of the biggest influences on him as a coach.

In an interview in 2011, he emphasised he liked to see players passing the ball and ‘attack-minded’ football.

“I have to say that spell with Tigana when we won promotion had a big influence on me as a coach and my philosophies,” Trollope said.

“I’ve always liked progressive, passing football. In any league you have to weigh that up with winning games but I certainly like to see players passing the ball and enjoying themselves and making sure you do play in the right areas but are attack-minded.”

During his time out of work after Bristol Rovers, Trollope immersed himself in the methods of then-world champions Spain.

“I managed to go out to Spain and watch the national team for a week at all the different age groups, both in training and games,” he added.

Approach to man-management?
Trollope has spoken in the past of his shared values with Hughton which place discipline and professionalism at the heart of any football squad.

He is the one who is said to have impressed on Rickie Lambert the importance of taking fitness and a healthy lifestyle away from the training ground seriously when the Liverpool striker was at Bristol Rovers.

Trollope was widely reported to have had a heated disagreement with Ben Foster in the car park of Birmingham City’s Wast Hills training base in 2011 only days into his job which preceded Foster’s move to West Bromwich Albion.

scott never asked or wanted the position as assistant manager but was pushed into it by tan. scott would go back to the youngsters tomorrow given the chance
and before people say scott should have told tan to stick it he has a mortgage and kids the same as everybody else and loves our club.

Steve,

I respect your thoughts on this, It would of been foolish of Young to decline the job offer as we all believe we can make a difference otherwise it's pointless getting out of bed each morning.

Scott Young needs a coaching CV that shows achievement. i.e, this player I coached went on to the Development squad, 1st team. At the moment it just reads 'I used to play for Cardiff City, and am now employed by them for once playing for Cardiff City.'

Jobs for the Boyos, Talented coaches need not apply. However, I do concede Young hasn't been allowed the time to establish himself as youth coach never mind an assistant manager!

Totally agree with you Steve, there are far too many dickheads on here slagging off Young, because he has found himself in a role that was beyond him, yet had to take under such circumstances. Scott Young is an asset to the club, if he is employed in a limited coaching role, which should be bringing the youngsters along and assisting with the first team sessions.
I like the appointment of Trollope, he could be just what Slade and the team needs, he's young has tasted success as a coach and manager and has a good philosophy and is a former Welsh international. That all sounds positive to me

Manager Russell Slade has appointed former Norwich and Birmingham coach Paul Trollope to the position of head coach at the club.

He joined our backroom staff the other day following the recent restructuring that has gone on at the club.

Speaking to the BBC the manager confirmed that Trollope was his appointment, and wasn't 'forced' on him from above.

The former Welsh international has plenty of experience, and was involved in his first training session on Sunday ahead of the game against Blackburn.

'His arrival and presence moves us forward and makes us better and stronger. I've known him a long time and we've had many battles with each other football wise.'

Trollope was also Bristol Rovers manager for five years, and helped them to League One promotion back in 2007, but has recently been working alongside now Brighton gaffer Chris Hughton.

'I've come across Paul since he's been in the Championship and Premier League with Norwich. He is a well respected coach and our chemistry as a group is enhanced with his presence. His experience will help with training and knowing the level are important factors to me.'

Slade also revealed that player/coach Danny Gabbidon could make the move to Chicago Fire before the end of the season as well, as he was involved in a friendly for them against Queens Park Rangers last week.

'They're interested in his services going forward. I'm not sure how that's going to work. It could be a possibility for him if that's the road he decides to go down. It'll be a big decision for him.'

The MLS season begins in March and the 35 year old 'could' make the move then.
