Cardiff City fans deliver their verdict on Russell Slade and his team: The results of our Bluebirds supporters poll

Sunday 15 February 2015

What you REALLY think about Russell Slade, the style of football, who's the best signing... and should Peter Whittingham be in the team?: THE RESULTS

Cardiff City are a team in crisis... and the people who matter most, the paying customers, have spoken.

Within the space of three days, more than 3,200 people took part in our WalesOnline state-of-the-Bluebirds survey, answering a range of questions including where you believe the team will finish this season, whether you believe Russell Slade should be given more time as manager and what your view is on Peter Whittingham and Fabio.

Here are the answers to the 12 questions we posed which will make fascinating reading for Slade and the Bluebirds hierarchy.

How you voted in our state-of-the Bluebirds supporters' poll

Question 1: Where will Cardiff City finish this season?

Russell Slade inherited a team in 17th position when he took charge as manager... the exact same position the Bluebirds find themselves in after the weekend results.

But those taking part in our poll fear it’s going to get worse, not better.

Almost 50% of you reckon Cardiff will be in the bottom six at the end of the season, but just avoid relegation.

A further 23%, almost one in four fans, reckon Cardiff will actually fall through the relegation trap door.

Barely anyone reckons the Bluebirds will be a top-10 team, let alone make the promotion play-offs.

THE RESULT:
Play-offs: 1%
Between 7th and 10th: 2%
10th-17th: 25%
Bottom six, but avoid relegation: 49%
Relegated: 23%

Question 2: Should Russell Slade be given more time in charge?
The Bluebirds manager is under fire, with many fans complaining about results achieved under him, tactics and the style of football adopted.

Slade began his reign reasonably well, but a horrendous run of just seven points out of the last 33 on offer has seen the pressure piled on.

Cardiff owner Vincent Tan is said to be backing Slade through what the club dub a period of transition.

But the vast majority of those fans taking part in our survey clearly believe the time has already come for change, even though Slade has only been in the job for four months.

Of those voting, the results show 81% believe a change is necessary.

Others reckon changing the manager yet again would be wrong, while for some the jury is still out on Slade.

THE RESULT:
Yes, it’s too soon for change: 10%
No, he’s out of his depth: 81%
Not sure, still undecided one way or the other about him: 9%
Question 3: Who has been Slade’s best signing?
Many fans have expressed concern about the calibre of footballer Slade has brought in during the January transfer window.

BBC Wales pundit Ian Walsh has been among the public critics, questioning whether what he dubs ‘lower standard players’ can be expected to get Cardiff out of their current predicament.

But the players are here... so which of the January captures thrills you the most?

Striker Eion Doyle is the answer, the front-runner Cardiff signed from Chesterfield netting 42% of the poll.

Perhaps a little surprisingly midfielder Stuart O’Keefe, who arrived from the Premier League with Crystal Palace, only got 3%.

THE RESULT:
Scott Malone: 8%
Alex Revell: 6%
Lee Peltier: 22%
Stuart O’Keefe: 3%
Eoin Doyle: 42%
Conor McAleny: 17%
Matthew Kennedy: 2%

Question 4: Will Eoin Doyle score goals at Championship level?
A simple yes-no for this one... with three out of four fans convinced Doyle, who had a decent record in League One, will prove his worth by scoring goals at the higher level.

THE RESULT:
Yes: 75%
No: 25%

Question 5: Which player were you most disappointed to see leave?
Cardiff have undertaken a huge exercise in changing the squad around, Slade bringing in the players he wants and the club shedding a lot of the men Ole Gunnar Solskjaer brought on board.

Of those who have gone, Norwegian teenager Mats Daehli is the player you regard as the biggest loss of the lot.

Almost 60% of you expressed disappointment at his departure to German football.

Spanish striker Javi Guerra, hardly given a look-in by the Bluebirds, comes next.

THE RESULT:
Juan Cala: 4%
Javi Guerra: 15%
Adam Le Fondre: 8%
Mats Daehli: 59%
Magnus Eikrem: 0.5%
Jo Berget: 0%
Ravel Morrison: 3%
Etien Velikonja: 0.5%
Kim Bo-Kyung: 9%
Guido Burgstaller: 1%

Question 6: Has Brazilian star Fabio been under-used this season?
Once more a simple yes-no answer. And the overwhelming verdict is that Cardiff have not properly utilised the talents of the former Manchester United defender.

THE RESULT:
Yes: 87%
No: 13%

Question 7: Are you happy with the style of football?
This presented the most overwhelming answer of the lot, with a huge majority making it clear they want a different approach from Slade and more entertainment.

Some Bluebirds fans reckon the football is actually getting even worse... with the drab first-half showing against Brighton last time out cited as a new low.

The figures pretty much speak for themselves.

THE RESULT:
Yes, it’s entertaining: 1%
No, it’s downright boring: 94%
It’s work in progress: 5%

Question 8: Does Peter Whittingham deserve his regular starting spot?
Whitts is something of a legend at Cardiff City Stadium for the moments of magic he has produced down the years and loyalty shown.

But right at this moment in time he splits opinion: Many believe he should be dropped, others fiercely argue that is ridiculous.

So we put it to the vote... does he deserve his regular place in Slade’s XI? Here’s the answer

THE RESULT:
Yes: 26%
No: 74%

Question 9: Rate these Cardiff City managers post-the Alan Durban days out of 10?
The football Cardiff are playing has been dubbed by some as the worst since the Alan Durban days of the 1980s.

So we asked you to rate some of the managers out of 10.

Here’s your vote.

Alan Durban
THE RESULT:
Kenny Hibbitt:
1-3 (out of 10): 29%;
4-7 (out of 10): 70%
8-10 (out of 10): 1%
Phil Neal:
1-3 (out of 10) 36%;
4-7 62%
8-10: 2%
Russell Osman:

4-7 (out of 10): 61%
8-10 (out of 10): 2%
Bobby Gould:
1-3 (out of 10): 33%;
4-7 (out of 10): 64%
8-10 (out of 10): 3%
Alan Cork:
1-3 (out of 10): 20%;
4-7 (out of 10): 75%
8-10 (out of 10): 5%
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer:
1-3 (out of 10) 59%;
4-7 (out of 10) 39%
8-10: 2%
Russell Slade:
1-3 (out of 10) 83%;
4-7 16%
8-10: 1%

Question 10: Will you still regularly attend matches if Cardiff are relegated?
This is a really moot point, with season tickets being renewed.

Can Cardiff continue to expect numbers through the turnstiles if they are playing League One football next season?

The vote was pretty much split right down the middle.

THE RESULT:
Yes: 51%
No: 49%
The Cardiff City Stadium has seen fluctuating attendances this season
Question 11: Does Russell Slade need a new No.2?
He’s got one, of course, with former Wales midfielder Paul Trollope having been brought on board as head coach since we put this survey online.

Not before time you reckon, too, with 83% of respondents believing Slade needs more help from his backroom team.

THE RESULT:
Yes: 83%
No: 17%

We are a club in poor form with only the more modern football supporters not attending so yes the crowds are going down.

it is not slades fault, he's had to cut costs,

heads are down, so it isnt easy,
booing, jeering our own players is making it worse,
the team is nervous. any misplaced pass these days is jeered by so called supporters!!!

I don't care how much money the players get paid, they are human like the rest of us, they are gonna suffer with low confidence with our crowd at the moment.

The real question here is for the majority of the 18000 is this..

Was it really about the Blue, or was it about the entertaining football?

I, Like yourself Annis are a Million times happier with the Return to a blue home kit, but when i started watching Cardiff in the 90s, there were no more than 8000, even after promotion back to the championship (Div 1) there were no more than 12000 watching Lennies team play the long ball week in week out
It was when Jones took over the crowds started coming in 21000 Plus watching entertaining football, then Malky with his Monotanous conistency 25000 watching us in red as we got promoted with "score one then defend for 80 minutes" then the prem with 28000 nearly every week as we got slaughtered in red playing crap football.
Now where are we? Playing in Blue badly with the official attendance at 21000ish, You and i both know its more like 14000 and dropping as we work our way back to the original 8000.

So when Dalaman himself asked you all that night " if we return to Blue, Will the crowds come back?"

Who said yes??

Have not voted, did not know.... But the football is is getting worse, people staying away!!!!! I am NOT a Slade fan, but even if we do change him.....WE still have the same players???. So Slade needs help on changing tactics.
On the positive side iam in Ninian 117 block at front with plenty of room to stretch my legs OR if it pis sis down there's room at the back...I think it be touch & go to go down to Div 1. The ICON I would give down the ground :sad7: :sad7: :sleepy2: :sleepy2: :sleepy2: is ... :sad7:

Not surprised at answers, but q1 is slightly wrong in fact that we did not play SaT and if we did and won our position would be 12th OK answer would be same but like said no surprises at responses! :old:

3000 is over 10% of our gates this season. I think it's a pretty damning statement on Russel Slade. How you can say otherwise is mystifying to say the least?. Slade has to go and I'm not one for wanting managers sacked willy nilly.

Maybe it is, but the jeering supporters have to shoulder some of the blame. How can anyone in the team try out a risky pass or go for a decent shot at goal if the supporters will jeer or boo if it doesn't work.
we the supporters have played a major part in breaking our team, unfortunately we can't get sacked we can only leave!

Re: 3,200 Vote ' DAMNING RESULTS ON SLADE & CARDIFF CITY '

The depressing thing about these results is is that, apart from Mr. Tan, Russell Slade and the ever changing Board of Directors, for the rest of us they are the "Bleeding" obvious. What I can't get my head around is surely, despite his continuing bizarre and baffling actions, Mr. Tans only hope of getting some/all of his money back is to have us in the PL.

Or is there a cunning plan? .... perhaps those in the "know" can explain it to me!

Any club relegated from the PL should have a core of players who can perform at that level (granted we lost more than our fair share through the evoking of dammed silly "get out" clauses) and, of course, the luxury of enormous (largest yet!) parachute payments to enable the club to hold onto & pay the inflated wages of their (hopefully) PL quality "flair" players and sign new ones with an eye to a speedy return. OGS seemed to go along with that, it then went tits up, he got sacked and overnight the "plan" change.

Enter Russell Slade, "cheap as chips" manager, a man in-tune with the "bean counting" non-football-savvy Board, he ships out a raft of PL potential players, replaces them with cheaper journeymen and players that may well "do" at Championship level (certainly OK for Division 1!), introduces them to his "expect to lose" style of play and for the next couple of years Mr. Tan will "take the money" & then sell for whatever he can get, oh and of course if he stays away from the place he can just about forget his rare business mistake!

Nearly half of those surveyed expect the Bluebirds to finish in the bottom six.

Less than a fifth of those surveyed feel it's too soon for change or are undecided about Slade.

Mats Daehli is the man 59% of those surveyed were most sorry to see leave.

And 94% of those who took our survey say they are unhappy at the style of football
