England capped Jay Bothroyd joins Japanese side Jubilo Iwata on free transfer

Thurs 12th Feb 2015

The former Cardiff City and QPR man embarks on a new challenge in his career.

Former Cardiff City hero Jay Bothroyd is set to begin yet another adventure in the twilight of his football career.

Bothroyd was certainly a hero during his spell with Cardiff City. The former Arsenal youngster signed for The Bluebirds in 2008 for £350,000 from Wolves, according to the BBC.

He ended up banging in the goals for the Welsh club. When he left for QPR in 2011 he had scored 45 goals in 133 games for Cardiff and earned his one and only England cap under Fabio Capello.

Since then his career went down a different path. He struggled at QPR and ended up leaving the club in 2013 after a loan spell at Sheffield Wednesday.

In January 2014 he took a leap of faith, joining Thai Premier League side Muangthong United for a year. His time in Thailand was reasonably impressive, but he became a free agent at the end of last year and has been looking for a new club since.

Now the 32-year-old has found one and he is staying in Asia. Bothroyd has joined Japanese second tier side Jubilo Iwata for a season.

The club, who are owned by Yamaha, are one of the biggest teams in Japan. They have won the J-League on four occasions and the Asian Champions League once in 1999. Recently they have fallen on hard times, being relegated for the first time ever in 2013 and failing to win automatic promotion back to the top flight at the first attempt.

This season the side, who are managed by former Japanese international and club legend Hiroshi Nanami, are looking to get back to the big time.

The fans of the Shizouka-based side will be hoping this England international can help them get back to where they belong.

Ridiculous how someone so talented can drift so much. Not been the same player since that England cap. Shame.

a city legend? good player but never ceases to astonish me how the term is bandied about to players like this. he was here for 3 years and was a very good player but was only here as a stepping stone.

ok legend may be a little to high praise but we've not been able to find a player to replace him since, sometimes u dont know what u got till its gone and that works both ways cos i dont think he knew what he had till he moved on, bothroyd and chopra still the best partnership we've had in a long time imo
