£5.1bn for new Premier League TV deal

Tue Feb 10, 2015 6:15 pm

Sky and BT Sport will pay a record £5.136bn for live Premier League TV rights for three seasons from 2016-17.

Sky have been granted five of the seven match packages on offer, including the first Friday evening games and both Sunday packages.

The Premier League plans to invest £56m in grassroots projects, including 50 artificial pitches.

Chief executive Richard Scudamore said clubs should address ticket prices to ensure stadiums are full.

Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher said on Twitter: "The amounts involved in ticket pricing, especially for away fans, has to change."

Under the new contract, which represents a 70% increase on Sky and BT's current deal, 168 games will be shown live, at an average cost of £10.2m per match.

Sky paid £4.176bn for 126 matches per season and BT £960m for 42 games.

Scudamore added: "Burnley are bigger economically than Ajax, which says a lot about how our league is made up."

Insane amount of money at a time when the world is slowly recovering from financial crisis. I'm sure more of this money could be shared out more evenly but the rich will get richer and the poor will get poorer.

Deals like this really depress me.

the financial state of the world has nothing to do with it. These are sucsessful companies with money to burn. The market is taking care of itsself in this effect. despite the obsence amount of money Sky shelve out, they still made over 500m in the last 6 months or something

This is precisely why championship clubs should strive to be promoted. When relegated last season, the earnings were more than previous winners of the league!! The money goes up so quickly. Now it will be £100m for coming last!!!

yes, and with a potential £50/60m wage bill for the next 2 or three years! The money should be more evenly spread too avoid financial disaster for relegated clubs and for fair play to the other 72 league clubs.

its just a further blow to young english players hoping to break through, but a boon to established players who's wages will continue to rise.

the mind boggles at how much these broadcasters are willing to pay for these football matches. if these costs are passed on to customers like me i'll just cancel, live streams are more than adequate, or for the cost of the subscription you can go to the pub and have a couple of pints and you're still quids in.
