Cardiff City goalkeeper David Marshall bidding to be fit for Sheffield Wednesday trip

Thurs 5 February 2015

By Terry Phillips
Number one goalkeeper Marshall has been out for more than a month with groin and ankle problems

David Marshall is making a bold bid to be available for Cardiff City’s Championship clash with Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday.

Number one goalkeeper Marshall has been out for more than a month with groin and ankle problems, but manager Russell Slade says: “He could be ready to play at Hillsborough.”

Scottish international Marshall is making faster than expected progress after a groin operation and has been training this week.

Slade rates his chances of facing Wednesday at ‘50-50’, but is delighted with the progress Marshall has made in a short time.

He will be assessed after training on Friday, but if Marshall isn’t back for the trip to South Yorkshire he will be ready for back-to-back home matches against Brighton next Tuesday and Blackburn a week later.

“David has been out on the training pitch with us and he has half a chance,” says Slade.

Simon Moore has played in Cardiff’s last four league fixtures and saved a penalty during their 2-0 home defeat against Derby County.

The 6ft 3ins Marshall, 29, is keen to be back playing and his training regime will be stepped up today to see if he is ready.

The Glasgow-born stopper suffered an ankle problem in December which hampered his kicking and movement, while he has since had a minor groin operation.

City have new signings Eoin Doyle, Conor McAleny and Matthew Kennedy in their squad for Saturday’s match in Sheffield. Doyle looks certain to make his full debut, while McAleny and Kennedy are likely to be among the substitutes.

Would be harsh on Moore, but I think he knew this would happen.

Not so fussed about who is in goal.

More concerned about the centre halves and the central midfield.

The present 4 incumbents are as bad as any in this league. (Morrison, Connelly, Whittingham & Gunnarrsson)

The longer those 4 continue to feature in the team, the longer City will suffer on the pitch.

I have to ask.... . Why the hell is connolly in that list? You're not the only one who says it. But he's as solid as they come!

I think that Marshall should have to fight for his place back. Moore has done really well, although I don't see that happening.

I thought Connolly was awful against Reading but not sure who else can be used ( Morrison is worse and Turner injured). Peltier, Manga, Connolly and Fabio/ John at the back for me

Does anyone know when Pilkington is due to return?

Moore has done well, but Marshall is a top, top keeper and is worth a goal every 3 games vs even a good keeper like Moore.

I'll be very happy to see him back

That's a fair shout Annis.
I'd be surprised if the club risked him mind given he's our most valuable asset.

Although he probably wouldn't have saved the penalty I reckon he would have stopped at least one of the goals in 3 of the last 4 games. Moore is doing a fine job, but Marshalls absence is costing us points.

He also puts the defence at ease and organises better.

For me possibly the best UK born keeper last season.

Harsh on Connolly, would start him alongside Manga.

Gunnarson and Whitts, good players but wrong formation.

Morrison - shit

I'm happy with Moore as our first choice tbh, as it's nice to see a goalie who's not afraid to come for crosses, one who dominates his 6 yard box and penalty area and can keep the ball on the field, whilst attempting to hit it in the general direction of one of our forwards! :D

Connelly IMO has gone backwards. He looks less impressive each time I've seen him this season. Possibly not fair to him to be played all over the back 4 but he is now showing why his previous clubs let him go. City need an old fashioned centre back and a footballer in central defence like we had with Phil Dwyer and Gary Bennett. Unfortunately they sold Hudson and Turner is injured. manga is a decent footballer.

As for the midfield pair, I agree they are good players and Slade is not getting the best out of them due to his dinosaur tactics.
