Peter Whittingham: Says "We want to get to the play-offs"

Cardiff City midfielder Peter Whittingham says the club are not involved in a relegation battle despite recent poor form.

The Bluebirds have lost their last three league matches and are 13th in the Championship, seven points above the bottom three and 13 adrift of the play-off places.

Whittingham, 30, says the players are focused on trying to make the top six.

"The lads are confident, we want to get to the play-offs," said Whittingham.

"We are looking up rather than down."

Cardiff have only gained eight points out of a possible 30 from their last 10 matches in the Championship.

Their latest defeat was on Saturday against second-place Derby, but Whittingham says he is not concerned "at the minute" about being dragged into a relegation fight.

"Obviously if it goes and carries on for another few weeks you are going to think about that sort of stuff," said the former Aston Villa player.

"Everyone knows you need to win games, if you don't go and win any of your next few games then you are going to go and get roped into a relegation fight.

"But we are looking up at the minute and it's all about us."

Whittingham hopes Cardiff can get their season back on track away at Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday.

"In this division if you go and win a couple of games on the bounce it sends you right up there," he said.

"All we need to do is put a little run together. We've got the players here to do it and hopefully we can do that."

A strong second half to the season can see this happening. But it's silly to be talking about this now. The team needs three or four solid results to solidify us being in the league next year and then push on.
