Cardiff City were not expected to do much business during the deadline day today but reports have emerged of a shock bid for the man dubbed the 'Aussie David Beckham'

Massimo Luongo is a Cardiff City target

Cardiff City have made a surprise bid for Swindon's Massimo Luongo, the man dubbed “The Aussie David Beckham” according to reports.

BBC Wiltshire claim the Bluebirds have made an enquiry about the in-demand midfielder, who set the Asian Cup alight as his country stormed to the title.

After an excellent tournament, Lugano scored the opening goal as the Socceroos beat South Korea after extra time in Saturday's final.

Since then, Luongo, 22, has turned down a £3.5m tax-free offer to play in the Qatari Stars League and has been named the Most Valuable Player at the tournament his country hosted.


His representatives claim he sees his future in Europe and he was also the subject of a £1.9m offer from an unnamed Turkish club and has attracted interest from some German Bundesliga clubs.



Sources close to Swindon says Town value their star asset at around £5m but would listen to offers around £3.5m. Cardiff are understood to have bid less than that figure.

Australian boss Ange Postecoglou claims Luongo is good enough to play for Barcelona, saying: "When I first went to watch Massimo at Swindon I was cursing him.

"It was a windy old day and I thought why wasn't he playing for Barcelona or Real Madrid - but now he might end up there anyway.

"The fact that he was playing in (the third-tier) division one didn't put me off."
