" Cardiff City must improve and quickly... starting with Saturday's Championship clash with Derby County "

Terry Phillips wants to see change with the Bluebirds playing attacking football with flair and panache

It’s time for the Bluebirds to get nasty.

Russell Slade’s men are driving Cardiff City fans away and sending those who are attending to sleep with football which lacks style, entertainment and panache.

Cardiff seem to have no direction and matches, both home and away, have been virtually devoid of excitement.

Even Slade said some of the football played against Reading in the FA Cup was ‘dire’ and added: “I would have walked out myself if I’d been in the crowd for the second half.”

Slade’s team are having to live on scraps of possession simply because they can’t keep the ball. They rely far too heavily on set piece moves and Aron Gunnarsson’s long throw for a goal threat.

Time and again, their opponents spend vast amounts of time with the ball at their feet, launching attacks and putting City under pressure.

Only three times in Slade’s 18 matches have his team hit the 50 per cent possession mark or better. The average is a poor 42.9 per cent.

Now it’s time to act – and fast.

City must find a philosophy and a way of playing which will carry them through the rest of this season, with at least some Championship credibility.

Cardiff’s chances of earning promotion may have gone but they must start building for the future.

Slade must find and encourage passion, desire, hunger in the home changing room. He must identify leaders, the men he can rely on to inspire and lift their team-mates out on the pitch.

There aren’t many candidates. Why, oh why, was captain Mark Hudson allowed to leave and join Huddersfield?

There is hope though that new boy Stuart O’Keefe will be a go-to player while Ben Turner is growing into his role as skipper.

Others, maybe Lee Peltier and Scott Malone as new guys in the group, along with Bruno Manga on his return from the Africa Cup of Nations, must show they can play leading roles.

Then Slade, if he wishes to persist with a direct approach, should make size a virtue, forget any thoughts of trying to play pretty midfield football which usually results in City losing the ball, and then go the whole hog when it comes to route one.

I’m not advocating that approach, but if it’s what Slade favours, then he should be single minded about it and make the most of a direct game.

He has Kenwyne Jones and Alex Revell in attack and both can provide the presence and physical threat to make life uncomfortable for defenders.

Jones can be an unstoppable force in attack and his 12 goals this season show he is a striker opponents fear.

Stoke City made a virtue of route one football a few years ago and used it to build towards a brighter, better future.

In Peter Whittingham, Cardiff have a quarter-back who can pick out the strikers with the accuracy of his passing. O’Keefe, Tom Adeyemi and Craig Noone can provide the legs for Whittingham to pick out the Jones and Revell combination. They can get forward to support and back to defend.

That’s where the nastiness comes in. Jones and Revell have to bully and intimidate defenders and make Cardiff a team others fear.

Right now, the opposing players surely feel Cardiff can be an easy touch and must rub their hands in glee when it comes to playing them home or away.

Joint Championship leaders Derby are full of confidence coming to South Wales for Saturday’s clash and believe they will earn all three points.

Second placed Derby have been impressive this season

City have the power and athleticism to make the visitors feel the heat and must give it everything they have. Too often the Bluebirds look good for half an hour or 45 minutes and are then dreadful for the rest of the match.

They need to find the intensity and mental focus to be consistent over 90 minutes and compete every inch of the way against Derby. Slade has been in his job almost four months and only now can he be truly judged.

He has worked to slash first team squad numbers, along with £12m off the wage budget and he is just about there.

I don’t believe any more players will be moving on, while Slade would love to bring one more striker in.

The transfer window closes on Monday. At that stage, he will have the players he wants around him and over the next four months, the Slade must show there is hope for next season.

Cardiff City fans have suffered since their team crashed out of the Premier League in their first season in the top flight.

Saturday’s visitors, Derby, know all about the pain of losing Premier League status.

This is their seventh season since being relegated and it took a long time to stabilise and start to move forward again. Now they look capable of going back up – and the Bluebirds must somehow knock their confidence at Cardiff City Stadium.

That will take a mix of leadership, team togetherness and a work ethic which will allow them to take Derby on and make it an uncomfortable 90 minutes for the Rams.

It’s time for Slade’s team to get ugly, add a nasty streak and show supporters there is hope. City fans are passionate, loyal people, but their patience has been tested to the full this season.

The paying customer deserves much better. It is up to Slade to devise a system which finally gets the Bluebirds punching their weight.

"Forget any thoughts of playing pretty midfield football which usually ends up with City losing the ball"  City lose the ball, because they take no more than two touches and hoist hopeful balls forward which nine times out of ten an opposition player takes back
A major problem, is that for the last four seasons, the managers and teams have been happy to give the opposition the majority of the possession, there has to be a complete change in mindset

Totally agree every team we've played this season either play with high intensity(work their bollocks off) or play nice little one two's around our middle players , now with Whitts he is the MASTER at slowing the game down he's not mobile enough to play high intensity football and by slowing it down the other team close us down which causes our players to hide from the ball cos they know their going to lose it so its knocked back for then hoofball and it starts again :bluescarf:
