" Russell Slade Insists "

Sun Jan 25, 2015 10:27 pm

Kenwyne Jones is staying at Cardiff City - Russell Slade insists his star striker will stay as January fire sale continues.

After John Brayford and Kim Bo-Kyung left Cardiff City on Saturday, manager Russell Slade insisted his top scorer, Kenwyne Jones, would be staying put.

Cardiff City boss Russell Slade insists top-scorer Kenwyne Jones is staying at the club.

As the Bluebirds manager looks to cut the club’s wage bill, Jones remains one of the biggest earners at the club.

But Jones underlined his value as he made it 12 goals for the season and six in his last eight games when he opened the scoring in the FA Cup defeat to Reading.

“We’ve had no enquiries for Kenwyne,” said Slade.

I am fairly confident that he will be here at the end of the month. Obviously if a ginormous offer came in for him then that would be left with the owner and chief executive and the committee, but, from my point of view, I’d like him here.

“He is our leading scorer. I’ve had assurances. At this stage there is no kind of mandate to lose Kenwyne Jones at all.”

There have been a number of high-profile exits as Cardiff seek to slash their wage bill. But Slade insisted it was not inevitable the club’s bigger players would be part of the cull.

“Not all the big earners will go,” added Slade.

“It depends who that might be and what position as well. We can take a hit on a midfielder or a centre-back. We still have work to do.

“I think it will be a busy week again for people at the football club. There are likely to be one or two more who exit the club, but we will balance that with one or two coming in as well.”

The comment'we can take a hit on a hit on a midfielder or centre back'. Does this mean he will keep big earners on those positions, or is he saying some will go from those positions?

I really hope this is true.

He may have his critics for his work rate, etc. but unlike a number of our "top" players he is doing what he is paid for; score goals :bluescarf:

When was the last time we had a striker score 12 goals before the end of January ? Even in our promotion season we struggled to get anyone into double figures.

Don't get me wrong, I don't think Jones is the complete answer but without his goal threat we are in real trouble.

Every time he gets a decent cross he seems to put it in. Just imagine what he'd be like if we had two wide men who could actually cross the ball   :ayatollah:

Looking at these comments again it does look as if we are going to lose a centre back and midfielder.
I guess it has to be either Morrison or Manga the cb's and I would be more gutted at losing Manga than any other City player. He is a class act and will do wonders for the team if he returns this week. I assume Burgstaller is the midfielder. Gunnar has just moved house and Whitts is part of the furniture here.

Bit worrying that regarding Kenwyne, Slade said “I am fairly confident that he will be here at the end of the month."
Manga will be gone soon, I'm quite sure of that.
The question is will any of our better players want to hang around in what's left of our squad when Slade has finished his clearout?

Our midfield is pretty crap at the moment but losing one of them without a replacement!!! The way the comment is phrased sounds like he thinks we have an abundance of riches.

Spot on.
Gets on my nerves, all the fans criticising him because he's not a silky smooth, 5' 9" runner.
He's a big lump & does what he does - links up midfield to attack & scores goals.

I think this is a good post. It would be a good move to ship Morrison and Whittingham out. We would probably get something for these two and, in the case of Whittingham it would allow the opportunity for younger players to develop and, with the introduction of a midfield dynamo, it would change the dynamic in midfield.

I really hope Slade/Tan/Young resist the temptation to sell Manga because he has to be the only talent we have left and is a rock to build on for the future.
