New midfield needed

Tue Jan 20, 2015 10:19 pm

We need to sign at least two midfielders before our next league game, how can we keep picking gunners just for his throws he cant dictate the play, waste of a player in that area, same with whitts you cant pick a player to play there just to take free kicks and corners, we need players in there that can pass and move, its to slow and static, so please slade sort it out most people can see it,we dont need any more full backs ffs

The midfield sounded like they had a much better game today in all fairness .

We were let down defensively , as a midfield 5 we do a lot better than the flat 4-4-2

We certainty fo better with 5 but its still a very poor quality midfield.

Just seen the goals our midfield dont give our defence any help by putting any tackles in, or keeping hold of the ball when we got it our ball retention is so bad we are constantly on the back foot and thats down to our midfield, not being good enough im sorry.

Cardiff City analysis: We get a midfield diamond but no dazzle, shine or cutting edge from Russell Slade's Bluebirds

Russell Slade moved away from his traditional 4-4-2 to play a midfield diamond at Middlesbrough but it still didn't bring any brightness to the loyal band of travelling fans. Chris Wathan was there to witness it

There is an irony in this Cardiff City side attempting to play with a midfield diamond.

Because right now there is no shine and no cutting edge. Dazzling they are not.

The best the Bluebirds might be able to offer is that they can at times be hard to break down, but, as Middlesbrough eventually proved with second-half goals from Patrick Bamford and Lee Tomlin, even that’s not quite cutting it.

And, as a result, the precious points went Boro’s way with Kenwyne Jones’ late header failing to polish up this performance.

Yes it was battling at times, yes there was some working hard and putting in the yards until the dying stages and, yes, Russell Slade will cling to such positives as Middlesbrough failing to make much more of their unsurprising dominance of possession.

But you can’t pretend that this was a display good enough to either win this game or convince that Slade is any closer to finding a real winning formula any time soon.

Aside from Jones’ belated goal when the game was effectively already won, the best the Bluebirds could offer in terms of asking attacking questions was from long throws or the odd corner.

And to get those it was a case of looking long and looking for what dropped in their favour.
Dull diamond
The aforementioned midfield diamond looked dull in contrast to the two and three of Middlesbrough, Grant Leadbitter dictating the play in a way Peter Whittingham once managed. Here he seemed to struggle to really know what his role is. As did others.

One example said it all as Tom Adeyemi, having won the ball with typical energy, looked to his left for a pass to create a counter. There was no-one there.

Similarly as Kadeem Harris, struggling to show his spark pushed up as a striker, complained as the lack of service continued, he and Aron Gunnarsson ended up rowing across the field as Boro countered. They know this isn’t working.
