Goalkeeper reflects on Saturday's win over Huddersfield Town...
Dimi Konstantopoulos believes the Boro defence can keep cool under pressure following Saturday’s 2-0 win over Huddersfield.
Boro kept a fifth clean sheet in successive games at the weekend and with Aitor Karanka’s back line boasting the best record in the league, Dimi said his teammates are confident in their defensive ability.
“We were under pressure towards the end but to be fair, we controlled most of the game,” said Dimi.
“While it was still 1-0, the opposition is trying to get something out of the game and because we didn’t manage to kill the game off earlier that kind of pressure is to be expected.
“I think we defended well, I did my bit, the lads did theirs and that’s what keeps clean sheets.
“We’re confident in our defending. We defend well in the majority of games we play and we keep quite a few clean sheets.
“I think even when we’re under pressure and it gets quite intense we know what we have to do.
“We don’t usually come under that much pressure, but it was good to be involved in the action on Saturday.”
Dimi made a number of important saves to stop Huddersfield from equalising before Lee Tomlin slotted the ball into an open net to seal all three points.
And with the Greek ‘keeper being called into action in the dying embers of the match, he explained how these games are often the most difficult for the man between the sticks.
“That’s the goalkeeper’s position; you have to be ready all the time,” he said. “You might be needed for one second to do your job and they are the most difficult games for a keeper.
“If you’re not focused and concentrating then you could miss that situation where you need to step up.
“As long as we create chances I think we’ll be ok. I would be worried if we weren’t creating chances and not controlling games but we are.
“One way or another it’ll break and we’ll go back to our best, keep scoring goals and making games easier for us.”
Boro are back in action on Tuesday night against Cardiff at the Riverside Stadium.
