Scott Malone believes the Bluebirds are promotion contenders
Cardiff City defender Scott Malone: “We’re back in the promotion race”
BY TOM CURREN ⋅ JANUARY 19, 2015 ⋅
Cardiff city defender Scott Malone believes his sides’ return to winning ways last weekend could be the catalyst for a renewed attempt on finishing in the play-off places.
Cardiff’s promotion credentials had been severely questioned after a slump in form that saw them go without a win in five games – but a victory at home to Fulham last weekend has helped steady the ship.
The game came just two days after the club had confirmed the signing of Malone from Millwall – but the 23-year-old defender started his first game for the Bluebird’s regardless, and helped his side to a much-needed three points and, perhaps more importantly as a defender, a clean sheet.
The game also saw the return of Cardiff’s blue home shirt, adding extra significance to an already memorable debut.
“It was good to make my debut and a little bit different from what I was used to at Millwall,” said Malone to Wales Online.
“Obviously, going back to the blue shirts meant it was nice to have the fans back on our side. I’m not sure what it was like before, but obviously the run of five results before that had been disappointing for a club of this stature. We were back to winning ways.
“I think our overall work-rate was as good as it had been all season. That’s what we have to strive to do now for the remaining games.”
Having fallen from the heights of the Premier League last season, Cardiff’s objective at the start of this term was to bounce straight back up to the top flight – a task that looked almost impossible a week ago.
Now, though, Malone believes Cardiff have the foundation with which to build momentum – enough to span the seven point gap that separates them from the play-off places.
“At the start of the season the aim was promotion and we are right in the mix now. We are halfway through the season and we are in the middle of the table.
“If we can get a few good results, why not go for the play-offs?
“You strive for the top two and the four places under that are a bonus. I still believe the play-offs are a realistic goal.

However it is great to see new players put on a brave face. I suppose it is something they have to do to fit into a new club.
