Norwich vs Cardiff - Is Carrow Road the worst away trip of the lot for long-suffering Bluebirds fans?
Jan 15, 2015

By Steve Tucker

Cardiff City face the daunting trip east to Norwich City on Saturday at a Carrow Road ground that's hardly been a happy hunting ground down the years

Cardiff City suffer defeat at Norwich in 2009Cardiff City are used to suffering dejection on the Carrow Road pitch
Never, in the field of football conflict, have so many, travelled so far, for so little.

OK, maybe evoking the spirit of Winston Churchill is over doing things just a touch, but Cardiff City’s trip to play Norwich at Carrow Road this weekend will awaken something in Bluebirds supporters and not all of it nice.

Of course, the first thing that will awaken them is an alarm clock at 5am and if it comes following a night of debauchery, so be it.

The trip itself, of course, seems interminable. Five non-stop hours in the unlikely event the M4, M25 and M11 are all completely traffic free.

And the trouble is when you get there as a Cardiff City supporter, although the Norfolk welcome maybe warm and the pasties touched by the hand of Delia herself, the pickings for the Bluebirds have proved rather slim down the years.

In truth things have not been so bad for Cardiff at the home of the Canaries in recent seasons, although they have not been that great either. Last time the two teams met at Carrow Road back in October 2013, Bluebirds fans made the 600-mile round trip to witness a 0-0 draw.

There have been a lot of draws recently, including a 1-1 in January 2011 which saw Jon ‘The Beast’ Parkin, on his Cardiff debut, smash home a screamer, a sentence you don’t see very often outside of a police report.

There have been other amazing moments mind. Anyone remember Luigi Glombard playing a brilliant through-ball to put Robert Earnshaw in on goal one year? Fantastic, the only trouble was ‘Earnie’ was playing for Norwich at the time.

Back in September 2008 the Bluebirds actually won 2-1 at Carrow Road thanks to goals from Roger Johnson and one from Peter Whittingham. It almost made the trip worthwhile. Almost.

That though was only Cardiff’s second ever win at Norwich in 25 attempts with the other coming way back in April 1971. If you were at that game, in which the Bluebirds also triumphed 2-1, congratulations or commiserations.

Watch: The Bluebirds pick up a rare Carrow Road win in 1971

It is indeed hard to work out which is the more appropriate.

And to Cardiff fans travelling this weekend, safe travels, good luck and fear not, you will be back in time for Match of the Day albeit the repeat at 7am on Sunday morning.

The distance is not much of an issue for me, it's the prices if anything.

Yep, if someone gives me £100 I'll go. Football as we all know is too expensive, travel is too costly, and booze prices have rocketed. I honestly don't know if I'll ever go to another away game. Sad, but true.

Football has totally out priced itself and there is No need for clubs to charge high prices, as Sky covers a lot of the costs and sponsorships etc.

I went there in 1982, left the Queens Pub in Pentre at midnight on the Friday. Fifty pearlers from the Rhondda, it was one of the few trips back then that I didn't run myself, pretty sure Paul Jones [ ten four] ran the trip. Absolute chaos as you can imagine, stayed in Great Yarmouth on the Sat night, sirens wailing most of the evening...happy days, with most of the original Rhondda 1015 on board...sweet memories...

Yeah that was it, all the Treherbert Ranchers/Baglan contingent had their heads shaved that day, expect Trev and his brother Wayne who already had skinheads...other people on the trip were the younger [ 17/18] Pentre lot plus the Prince and Galed older heads...great trip.

Long old journey for you boys , hats off to each and everyone of you.

Do remember a few yrs back when I went to a pub before the game at Norwich, a Tuesday evening game.
For me not to bad a journey from Luton, got to the pub and A lot of AAMB faces were there, food laid on , curry I think lol
We had driven to the pub but were then told we couldn't leave car at pub so joined the convoy of a few coaches and police vans.

We were behind the first police van and infront of all the coaches, Phil who was driving wound down all the windows and was blaring out some Cardiff songs, did get some funny looks from some of the locals.

Shame we lost 1-0 but was a good day out, was amazed how many bluebirds travelled up and on a Tuesday evening.

Oh I know why, cos we are the best fans in the world. :bluescarf: :bluescarf: :ayatollah:

I don't get to go to many aways due to work, but the price of tickets is way to expensive , especially when you add in travel , should be around £15-£20 for away tickets

nowadays football is a business like any other and fans are customers. anyone who thinks otherwise is stuck in a time warp.

you are correct, ticket prices at PL clubs form such a tiny proportion of revenue that it would have no impact on finances to reduce prices by say 20%.
