The great Cardiff City clear-out: Russell Slade could show 10 Bluebirds the exit door this month

Tues Jan 13, 2015

By Chris Wathan

Javi Guerra has become the latest Cardiff City player to leave Russell Slade's squad as he prepares to join Malaga on loan

Russell Slade looks set to continue his attempts to clear the decks at Cardiff City which could see TEN Bluebirds quit the club this winter.

“Russell Slade came and told me that he will not give me a chance. He would not even look at me. It was a shock,” Burgstaller is quoted as saying. “I know that it is not because of my football qualities. Now I look around for something new to offer. That is clear.”

City boss Slade has already overseen the exits of Mats Daehli, Magnus Wolff Eikrem and Juan Cala over the past month while Etien Velikonja was shipped out on loan last week.

Now striker Javi Guerra is set to complete a loan switch to La Liga outfit Malaga with his father telling Spanish media the summer signing is thrilled to be leaving Cardiff City Stadium after managing just 41 minutes of league action this season.

Jo Inge Berget has revealed he is in discussions about securing his departure after being left to train with second tier Norwegian side HBK while midfielder Guido Burgstaller has claimed he was told within weeks of Slade’s appointment he had no future at the club.

It is thought there is a need to cut the bodies at the club with Slade having previously hinted there will be a need to make room in a bloated Bluebirds squad for any further transfers.

And after the arrivals of Scott Malone and Alex Revell last week, there are question marks over the future of defender Fabio and striker Nicky Maynard with Reading heavily linked with a move for the latter. Midfielder Kim Bo-Kyung has attracted the attention of Scottish giants Celtic meaning Slade’s clear-out could enter into double-figures.

Guerra’s departure seems imminent after detailed reports of his move to Malaga coming a year after his pre-contract signing from Real Valladolid was hailed as a coup by the club, Vincent Tan having claimed to have been personally involved in the negotiations to bring him to South Wales.

However, after his 15 goals in La Liga last year, Guerra managed just 41 minutes of Championship football and his last involvement as a Cardiff player came in the disastrous 3-0 League Cup defeat to Bournemouth where he was hauled off after just 37 minutes and publicly criticised by then-caretaker boss Scott Young.

Austria international Burgstaller also looks on his way out having hardly featured since being signed from Rapid Vienna by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, the 25-year-old midfielder claiming in an interview in his homeland that he had been frozen out by Slade.

“Russell Slade came and told me that he will not give me a chance. He would not even look at me. It was a shock,” Burgstaller is quoted as saying. “I know that it is not because of my football qualities. Now I look around for something new to offer. That is clear.”

Daehli joined Bundesliga side Freiburg last month, Eikrem is being linked with a move back to the Netherlands after his contract was cancelled while Juan Cala is set to join Getafe after negotiating his early release. Velikonja – who has 18 months remaining on his Cardiff deal – joined Belgian side Lierse on loan until June.

Rightly or wrongly players needed to go! We can all speculate why certain players are leaving? But time wil tell if correct decisions made. That may be later in season but at least get better perspective

I have no problem with a clear to balance the books. Simply to many players and plenty just not up to the task. No doubt an argument for some, formations, opportunities and politics but blue has been returned and we must make a fresh start. Macheda should be added to the departures. I love Marshall but would cash in to strrenghten finances. Moore is a great talent.

Its because most of them are overpaid prima donnas. Slade is right to get rid of most of them.

I totally agree! Clear out, balance books, bring in experience and play the kids.

No wonder our possession stats are so bloody pathetic when all we do is get rid of all players who can put their foot on the ball and pass it.

Hooooof

Agree we need to clear out the crap performers who we are wasting money on

Don't agree with all of Slades choices....but one thing is clear, he is targetting hard working 'british type' players. He has no time for those who are, let's say, not quite used to playing in the english leagues

Didn't this get us promoted last time?

And relegated.. Have to be able to play football in the premier league, so no use going there again. Unless we have another 50 million to spend.

Slade has been left in a mess, Ole's scattergun approach has been a nightmare

It's obvious slade just froze out certain players for whatever reason without even looking at them properly with what burgstaller is saying. Got the same vibe from daehlis interview although he wasn't as outspoken.

Hardworking isn't just a British trait. The most hardworking team is probably Germany. They work much harder than the English. The americans and the chileans busted their ass medel that was one hard working guy for both club and country.. This is more about cost cutting and or fitting into slades style. He's a very old school manager.
