UPDATED CARDIFF CITY: TRINIDAD MIDFIELDER KHALEEM HYLAND

Mon Jan 12, 2015 1:01 pm

:ayatollah: " UPDATED " :ayatollah:

Cardiff City could be about to make Khaleem Hyland their next January signing after he joined the club for a week’s trial.

But what do we know about the man who looks set to leave Racing Club Genk in Belgium?

Here we take a look at just what Bluebirds fans can expect should Slade decide to hand the 25-year-old a deal at Cardiff City Stadium...

What position is he?
Hyland is a big, strong and combative defensive midfielder who is said to have a good range of passing and a fierce shot. He is also able to slot in at the back if need be and played for Racing Club Genk there when they took on Chelsea in the Champions League in 2011.

Where has he played his football?
He started his career with San Juan Jabloteh in his native Trinidad and Tobago before Harry Redknapp tried to take him on at Portsmouth in 2008. That move was ultimately doomed though when the then-19-year-old Hyland failed to secure a work permit. That was in spite of him making his debut for Trinidad and Tobago’s national side that year and featuring in a friendly for the Soca Warriors against England a couple of months previously.

He ended up with Zulte Waregem in Belgium where he scored five times in 59 appearances before moving to Genk in 2011. There he has four goals in 75 games. He now has dual citizenship after getting a Belgian passport so securing a work permit should present no problems on this occasion.

Genk and Trinidad midfielder Khaleem Hyland is training with Cardiff City, according to BBC Sport.

A real physical presence in midfield at 6ft1, with Champions League experience alongside the likes of Courtois, De Bruyne and Benteke when they first qualified a few years' back.

Fingers crossed for this one. :ayatollah:

No rumour would be complete without grainy you tube footage. http://youtu.be/INHp0avZy5c
So if he is that terrible on you tube does that mean he must actually be good? After all Cornelius looked great on you tube.

If he signs we'll have a Khaleem and a Kadeem.

I will be very confused.

He is a quality defensive midfielder and is exactly the type of midfielder that we need. He is a no-nonsense, tough tackling, hard working, determined player who if is available on a free, would be a brilliant acquisition for the club. He is also pretty good in the air as he is around 6ft-6ft2 and he is around the same build as Arsenal's Abou Diaby or ex Gunner Patrick Vieira. I am not saying that he is as good as Diaby and I'm certainly not saying that he is as good as Vieira, but he is certainly good enough for the Championship and even the Premiership. I think he is definitely more suited to British Football and he can be a big hit for us. Currently we do not have this type of midfield battler at the club. I would have thought that as he is available on a free that he would not have been such a risk for us to have given him a contract until the end of the season or just a one year contract, rather than taking him on trial. Cause whatever happens, whether we sign him permanently or he does not impress the boss and we don't sign him, we will still not have a defensive minded midfielder at the club. Due to us not having much funds for transfers this window, I don't think we will find as good a DM than Hyland - who is on a free - with the small amount of money that we seem to have. So, due to me having seen him play a good number of times for both Genk and Trinidad + Tobago, I think he will be a good signing for us, if we do go on to sign him and he would definitely make us a lot stronger in DM. Further on down the line if we can get Hyland, a fit Dickagcoi and Adeyemi as our 3 central midfielders, we would have a very, very strong midfield who could dominate the midfield areas for us, against most Championship sides.

And? Nastasic hasn't played a single game for Man City this season after having a large contribution in Man City's first Premier League win, but that wouldn't stop - and hasn't stopped - top clubs from showing an interest.

It's all about managerial preference.

Nastasic is in the Manchester City squad which I would suggest is ever so slightly better than Genk's squad. Nastasic has chosen to leave because of his lack of opportunities in the first team, Hyland on the other hand has been kicked out! Other than that a good comparison!

We've missed a player like him in our midfield imo. Haven't had someone like him since Seyi Olofinjana. Would like this to happen.

Due to me being housebound for the past 12 years, due to ill health, I have a little bit of spare time on my hands, you could say. I don't just watch English football you know, I love to watch the Belgian, Dutch, French, German, Spanish, Brazilian and sometimes Portuguese leagues. When a manager says that they have scoured Europe in trying to find players and they just are not there then they are talking crap. As there are so many talented footballers in those countries that I listed above and even in the smaller nations there is some quality. On top of that the majority of them are well worth the value compared to most of the British players, who are totally overpriced. When it comes to Hyland, he has been at Genk for 4 seasons now and I watched him when he was at Zulte Waregem too, just cause he has not featured much this season, I've seen him play in previous seasons for them. I probably watch a good 14+ games a week - especially if there are midweek fixtures - and I'm not even counting the City or the Sky Games. You can watch any football league you want to on the Internet. It's pretty sad, but due to my ill health football is my life. Trust me, even though I love football, I would do anything and I mean anything else rather than be stuck in the house watching the world go by. What a waste of a life, eh????

How do you know that Hyland was kicked out?? He may just not see eye to eye with the manager, but still be a very good player. Look how good Daehli is, did he get kicked out because he was poor? Or Guerra is he going because he is not good enough? The answer to both is no. Slade just prefers his certain type of player and maybe that is the same with Alex McGleish - Genks manager. For all we know Hyland could be Genks highest earner and their owner wants the high earners gone just like our owner wants our high earners gone. Just because a manager does not want a particular player, does not automatically mean that that player is not good enough.

The reason players look great on youtube is because they show their highlights, ANY player can look good when the only footage they show is their best bits.

You are right we haven't. The first half of that season Olofinjana was the exact type of player that we needed back then and what we still need now. When Jones played him in his correct defensive midfield position Olofinjana was quality. But, then the second half of that season Jones for some unknown reason wanted to play him as an attacking midfielder which he did and Olofinjana was poor for the rest of that season and we never did sign him permanently. I still think that if Jones had not of moved him further up the field, then we would have possibly got promoted automatically. We went back to needing a DM when Olofinjana was playing as an AM, when he should have been a DM and Peter Whittingham should have been our AM with Olofinjana patrolling in front of the back four. It was for decisions like this as to why Jones had to go as manager.

In no way did I compare the quality of Hyland to Nastasic. I was comparing the situation of both players.

On the other hand, Nastasic has all-but been kicked out of Manchester City. There's every chance that Pellegrini's thoughts on the defender are the same as McLeish's on Hyland. It's hard to go from having a near-pivotal role in a title winning squad to not playing whatsoever without some sort of personal issue between the player and manager. This could very well be the same situation.

It would be a job that I would absolutely love, as it brings two of my favourite past times in football and travelling, together. I would also do it for a very reasonable wage, I wouldnt take the pee. However, I find it terribly difficult to attend my many hospital appointments at the Heath. Sometimes, I am unable to leave my house due to my many physical & mental problems. When I do FINALLY get better - cause some day I will I feel, as I say to myself I CAN get better as I try and be positive about things, as anything negative I try to steer clear of - then I would love to set up my own football scouting agency. So, that the best young players that slip through the net, who are from Cardiff and the rest of Wales, get a second chance to fulfill their dreams.
