Adam Matthews is on Russell Slade's radar as the Championship club look to push for promotion

The Celtis star is on manager Russell Slade’s radar as the English Championship club regroup for a promotion push with owner Vincent Tan building bridges with fans after months of supporter disillusionment.

Tan has already sanctioned the signing of Alex Revell and Scott Malone from Rotherham and Millwall respectively in recent days – and it’s believed Matthews is also on his shopping list.

It’s all part of the Malaysian’s new-found desire to make peace with supporters, who yesterday welcomed his U-turn when he instructed a return to the club’s traditional colour of blue instead of the red he introduced to widespread anger three years ago.

The controversial owner said: “My wish is to unite and make this club successful.”

Tan acted after Cardiff fans voted with their feet as just 4,194 turned up to last weekend’s FA Cup tie against Colchester.

Cardiff haven’t won in five league games, are now 12th in the Championship and are in real danger of slipping out of the promotion race.

City know there will be a huge emotional reaction to the change of colour at the home game against Fulham today, with boss Slade hopeful his players can produce a victory.

But he also knows new players are needed for the second half of the season, with former fans’ favourite Matthews in the frame.

And that’s one more worry for Celts boss Ronny Deila as he plans for the rest of the domestic season as well as an assault on the Europa League at the club’s winter break in Gran Canaria.

Deila is already dealing with long-held interest from English clubs in Virgil van Dijk, Efe Ambrose and Kris Commons and certainly wouldn’t want to lose Matthews.

The 22-year-old began his career at Cardiff and played for the Bluebirds between 2009 and 2011. He has 12 caps for Wales.

' Cardiff City want Adam Matthews return '

Cardiff City manager Russell Slade will reportedly launch a bid to lure Celtic defender Adam Matthews back to his former club.

The 22-year-old, who has made 12 international appearances for Wales, played for the Bluebirds between 2009 and 2011 before switching to the Scottish champions.

However, The Express claims that City are ready to add Matthews to their ranks after completing a deal for Rotherham United's Alex Revell on Friday.

Matthews departure could spark an exodus from Celtic Park, with English clubs already said to be interested in Efe Ambrose, Virgil van Dijk and Kris Commons.

Cardiff are currently 12th in the Championship table.

Not trying to be negative here, but reading Celtic forums from time to time, I´ve noticed the Celtic fans don´t rate him at all. Among all Celtic players, he is probable the one that got bashed the most.

Rate him highly but do we really need him? Brayford has got the RB position covered. Connolly and Fabio would be back up also.

I hope not.

Brayford is the starter

It would hurt his development for Wales.

Never been his biggest fan, decent enough but I think people get excited because he came through the Academy. Wouldn't think he is a Slade type player anyway not the best defender.

I wouldn't mind Matthews back but we do have Brayford, Connoly, Fabio who can play RB. Also we got McNaughton and Theophile-Catherine out on loan.
Surely we should be putting some heavy firepower in our attack. Not trying to have a go but does anyone actually think Revell can get us to promotion?

I wa hoping the same because in my opinion he is the biggest miss. We need this type of box to box midfielder more than we need another fullback.

Yep, agree!

Wasn't responsible for his own departure in the way a certain other player was, so welcome back if it happens :ayatollah:

Whilst Adam Matthews is a pretty decent player, if we didn't have John Brayford I'd love to have him back,
but in my humble opinion Brayford is pure quality, an attacking full back who can also defend who we will see the best of when he has players of similar quality around him.
The number of times he's flown down the flank on a counter attack only to have to wait for supporting players to catch up with him has been really frustrating to watch this season.

More loose use of the word star

IMO Mathews is a player very much like Fabio and John. A cross between a full back and a midfielder.

Yeah but he can actually defend as well and has proven it. Fabio and John both go missing a lot. There's no doubting their attacking credentials and ability to get forward but when that leaves you with gaps at the back its bad. Matthews is better at defending in my opinion based on what I've seen from him at Celtic. Is he the best? No, but he's decent for the position we're currently in.
