Rotherham boss Steve Evans: Sad to lose Alex Revell

Rotherham boss Steve Evans insists the club had no option but to sell Alex Revell to Cardiff.

The 31-year-old, whose contract at New York Stadium expired in the summer, penned a two-and-a-half-year deal with the Bluebirds for an undisclosed fee after passing a medical on Thursday.

He leaves the Millers after three and a half years where he scored 34 goals in 170 appearances and was the figurehead of the club's rise from League Two to the Championship.

Evans, who picked Revell in his matchday squad for 121 consecutive games prior to Saturday's FA Cup defeat to Bournemouth, insists the striker was not going to sign a new deal with the club so they had to cash in.

"Back last April the football club and the representatives of Alex had been in negotiations to extend the player's contract beyond the summer of 2015," Evans said.

"But despite vigorous efforts by both parties sadly an agreement could not be reached.

"In a situation such as this any football club must take advantage of any considerable asset and the final offer from Cardiff City met the valuation of our chairman, who has to be said at all times drives a fierce bargain.

"Alex Revell has simply been stunning for Rotherham United and has given me as his manager some wonderful performances, loyalty, commitment and passion.

"I have spoken to Alex and he knows as a man what my thoughts of him and his young family are.

"Everyone at Rotherham United is indebted to him and he will be welcome back with open arms at any time in the future.

"He has now joined a fantastic club in Cardiff and he gets the personal rewards that come with such a transfer, we wish him well for the future."

Revell joins up with Russell Slade in south Wales having previously played under him at Brighton and Leyton Orient.

"I've worked with him in the past," said Slade. "He came into the game later than some players do, he's 30-something now and a late developer but he's still improved since he left me at Leyton Orient and I think he will bring a lot to the group.

"He doesn't half work around the pitch. He's not prolific in terms of goalscoring record but what he brings to the team I think will be evident very quickly."

I think this is the point all the complainers are missing. Slade admits he is not prolific but if he works his socks off and brings Alf, Macheda or Maynard in to play then its them that will score. He will also chip in with a few himself.

I'm happy and will be happy if every club around us loses their best players this month as it'll give us a fighting chance of avoiding the drop.
