Cardiff City boss Russell Slade targets major January overhaul as he admits record low crowd made for difficult night

Slade is set to bring in a number of players after watching his side record a much-needed win in front of just 4,000 supporters

Cardiff City boss Russell Slade admitted it was a difficult night for his players as they were forced to play in front of a record low crowd amid growing signs of fan apathy.

Slade suggested the Bluebirds had almost surrendered home advantage, with just 4,194 supporters turning up to watch the 3-1 FA Cup third round win over Colchester United.

The embarrassing crowd was more than 1,000 less than the previous lowest for a match against Dagenham in 2009 as a mixture of disgruntlement, cold weather and the fact the game was televised created a subdued atmosphere.

“We had to try and create our own atmosphere," the under pressure Cardiff boss said.

“When it’s like that there is a need for self motivation. Our best spell was just after half-time when we stepped up the intensity and scored two goals which was the most pleasing aspect of the game.

“You want an atmosphere to make it difficult for the opposition. When the crowd is low like this it’s not such an advantage to be at home. The crowd have a big part to play.

“I want as many fans to come and watch the team as possible. I understand they want to see a winning team, but this is a work in progress and there is a lot of work to be done.

“It will take a little bit of time to get that sorted out. Will I sort it out? Yes I will."

Slade is set to be a busy man in the coming weeks as he looks to overhaul his squad in the January transfer window.

“This job hasn’t been harder than I expected, but there is more work to be done than I initially thought there would be in terms of personnel and what we have to do during transfer windows.

"It’s clear how important this window is and how important the summer window will be. This club needs to regroup and start to rebuild.

“That’s what I honestly believe. If it’s not me doing that then somebody else will be in the situation of having to do it.

We have had four leave and more will be leaving. That will give me more opportunities to bring players in.”

Slade was asked how close he is to signing Millwall left-back Scott Malone and he would only say: “He is on our radar.”

how much has slade got to spend ?
and how many has he got to get off the wage bill

are we only going to go for medicore players or can slade attract a few top quality players - we need bodies in now not on the last day of the transfer window - we have 4 massive games - lets get them in before the 10th

Well judging by signing Malone and eyeing up other lets say lower level players he doesn't seem to be having much to spend . The major overhaul is getting rid of the big earners. Marshall will be sold for sure.

I hope Marshall isn't sold... but if he is, fingers crossed moore might be up to the task. He certainly made some good saves last night for us.

I'm looking forward to seeing what kind of squad slade builds. No nonsense team who can work together hopefully... Instead of the team of 'budding stars' we had who couldn't even pass to each other.

Erm, how about a team playing in blue at home..?

Russell Slade is a Tan lackey who's only job is to be a front man whilst the player purge continues. He will have a peanuts transfer fund based entirely on reduced current wages. He is also a tactical dinosaur, but to be fair to him he probably already knows that and he must simply be over the moon to be in Championship football work at all. None of this matters really as the most important thing now is to get our heritage back, one way or another. Never forget that Tan despises Cardiff fans and his escape plan will be merciless to save face and any money he can.

Judging by his alleged initial offer of 75k for Malone which was upped to 100k. I'd say he has bugger all to spend.

Daehli has gone for 2 mil, plus the sale of medel , caulker, mutch and Campbell. Add the parachute payments you'd have thought we would be able to spend a 3 or 4 mil Or even some loan signings from the prem league.. Buying these players I really don't see the point. I'd rather stick with Declan John on the left that Malone from millwall. Same for midfield too. Surely ralls is better than cox from orient?

First time in a while I've not been looking forward to a transfer window... Then again, prob best we don't give slade money to spend as I still would like to see him replaced... .

Don't be surprised if Tan rakes in more than he spends in January.

Some idiots will probably pay a few million for Fabio as he's Brazilian and still only 24. Berget will go for nothing. Should get fees for Guerra, Maynard and Kimbo (if he goes). Not much for the rest though.

If there is truth in the rumours that we are after Dean Cox then I would guess the fee would be about £100k. I reckon they could get Eoin Doyle for under £1m, although he is a huge gamble and probably not worth that. I just hope Slade doesn't panic buy as we have done previously. May as well try for young loan players from the likes of Chelsea, Man City or Arsenal. This season is a write-off anyway so better to hang on until the summer to strengthen in depth.
