The Cardiff City debrief: A new approach but same old story for frustrating Bluebirds at Charlton

Saturday Dec 27, 2014

By Terry Phillips

How did Cardiff set up?
Craig Noone was given a roaming role across the pitch and he caused major problems for Charlton as he popped up through the middle and in wide areas on either side.

He pushed on behind the front two of Kenwyne Jones and Adam Le Fondre, looking to burst forward from deep positions.

Noone’s workrate and hunger to attack were first rate, while he was willing to get back and defend when needed.

He tired near the end and it was such a pity he made the crucial error which led to Charlton’s late equaliser.

He conceded possession on the edge of the penalty area and Cardiff’s lead was gone.

Tom Adeyemi and Aron Gunnarsson were asked to provide the legs in midfield, giving Peter Whittingham the opportunity to create.

John Brayford produced one of his best defensive performances for Cardiff in a back four which looked solid for most of the first half.

But when Charlton switched to a three-man defence and looked to attack in search of an equaliser City players never quite got to grips with their formation.

Did the changes to the team work?
Fabio, Bruno Manga, Kadeem Harris and Federico Macheda were left out with Declan John, Sean Morrison, Tom Adeyemi and Kenwyne Jones called up.

Russell Slade still hasn’t found the complete answer at left-back, having tried a number of options.

Fabio and John are outstanding on the ball, but both have questions over how solid they are defensively.

Slade presumably left out Manga knowing that, having just returned from injury, the Gabon international isn’t ready for two matches in three days. Sean Morrison stepped in and did well alongside Ben Turner.

The athletic and energetic Adeyemi put in a lot of good running and scored his first goal for Cardiff with a clinical header, while Jones put in a big effort at centre-forward.

Was it a deserved sending off? And how come Cardiff didn't dominate against 10 men?

There was no doubt that Callum Harriott had to be sent off. It wasn’t a malicious challenge, but his first touch was poor and he tried to rescue the situation and lunged in with studs showing. The challenge caught Craig Noone and Charlton manager Bob Peeters agreed Harriott had to go.

Having played so well against a full Charlton team and taken the lead through Tom Adeyemi it seemed as though a second Cardiff away win of the season was on the cards,

But it didn’t happen. Charlton regained the initiative after opting for a three-man defence and going for broke, sending on Igor Vetokele and Ogucho Onyewu from their bench.

I can’t believe Cardiff were thrown by the changes, but they certainly looked it.

What were the fans like in the wake of Vincent Tan's comments:?

The fans certainly sounded happy during the first half. Russell Slade’s men were in the club’s traditional blue strip and City supporters celebrated seeing their team on top and winning. Sadly, City couldn’t complete the win and had to settle for a hard-earned point.

But chief executive Ken Choo promised fans City will play in their blue second strip in remaining Championship away matches and the club stuck to their promise.

How do we assess the team's current situation?

It's the same old story from City. They have the potential to be promotion contenders, but simply can’t find the consistency of form.

Cardiff paid the penalty for poor starts against Bournemouth and Brentford, losing after staging a spirited fightback each time. They must do better over longer spells.

This time they were excellent during the first half but they allowed standards to slip. When will Cardiff produce a 90-minute display?

They cannot keep playing at or near their best only for short spells.

"But when Charlton switched to a three-man defence and looked to attack in search of an equaliser City players never quite got to grips with their formation."

Sums up our Management team, they simply can't go to a plan B when needed in a game. They need to be replaced with an experienced coaches.

Thanks for the detailed account Annis.

What is encouraging is that you didn't write about a lack of effort. The players were. Olivaceous and apart from the one error, Noone was outstanding in a physically draining role.

If you'd asked me 10 games ago if I'd accept 1 point away to Charlton, I'd have shaken your hand so it wasn't a total disaster. Disappointing for the lads more than anything, especially against 10 men.

I'm quite philosophical about the result. Watford, we are waiting for you!!!! :bluescarf:
