Bob Peeters' reaction following the Championship clash with Cardiff City at The Valley on Boxing Day

Bob Peeters felt that his side should have claimed all three points after Charlton’s 10 men battled back to claim a draw with Cardiff City at The Valley on Boxing Day.

Things were looking bleak for the Addicks when Tom Adeyemi gave the visitors an early lead before Callum Harriott was shown a straight red card for his challenge on Graig Noone before the break.

But a superb second-half performance saw a revitalised Charlton battle back, creating a host of chances before Johann Berg Gudmundsson blasted home the equaliser with a spectacular strike from distance in the 88th minute.

And despite the Head Coach being delighted with his players’ showing after the break, he told the assembled press following the 1-1 draw that he felt the Addicks' impressive second half deserved more than just the one point.

Question: A point was a good result in the end wasn’t it?

Bob Peeters: “I think we should have won.

“They had one throw-in and scored a goal, then we were down to 10 men. We knew it would be difficult so we said to the players to keep the result until half-time and we’ll talk it through.

“We agreed that we would start the same way as we finished the half, and we would take some risks. We put Guchi on for some physical strength at the back because they were aiming for long throws and set-pieces.

“We went three at the back and put a striker on and in the second half we battered them.

“If Igor scores in the last second then the roof would have come off at The Valley because the fans were loving every minute of the second half, especially with 10 men.

“I’m very pleased with the way my players responded because it was a difficult thing going down to 10 men and being 1-0 down, but the second half was very good.

“This is the best I’ve seen us play, especially with 10 men. Everything was down to determination and we scored a cracking goal and could have scored more.

“We hit the post twice. I think we had enough chances to win the game and the result is not the best but the way we performed must give us a mental boost, especially when you see Igor Vetokele was not fit.

“He came on and brought us something and I thought George Tucudean did very well as well.

“We changed Nick Pope because he was a bit unlucky in the last few games so we played our third goalkeeper Neil Etheridge and I think he was fantastic today so that will give him a boost.

“Only the result is unfair I think, but for the rest I’m very proud of my team.

Q: Would you have liked that Vetokele chance to have fallen for someone else or would he be your first choice?

BP: “It doesn’t matter as long as they put it in the net, but there was a little bobble when he kicked it.

“It’s the story of the last few games. Tucudean had the same ball against Millwall.

“We have a lot of games that we can finish off, but we can talk about it for hours. We need to focus on the positive things and it will turn. If you play like this you will get your rewards.

“At some stage we were very deep, down to 10 men and 1-0 down so I said to the guys at half-time we have reached the bottom now and we can only go up and be positive because we have nothing to lose and that’s what we did in the second half.

“Hopefully the fans will see that if they back us up it is a very difficult place to come.

“Sometimes it goes a bit quiet and second half, maybe it’s down to the players that they maybe need to put some effort in so the crowd get lively, but in the second half Cardiff were all over the shop because the fans were pushing us towards their goal.

“If we can do that every minute of the game then a lot of teams will come here and lose points.

Q: What was your view of the sending off?

BP: “I think it was a sending off.

“He misses his first touch and he wants to undo his mistake. He went in late, but he didn’t intend to hurt him.

“I can understand why the ref would decide to send him off, but that was maybe the only decision he got right today.

“I think the referee had, like we did at Blackburn last week, a bad day the office, but we need to focus on ourselves and try to get a good result at Ipswich.”

He's correct they should've won.
Wonder how our players and manager would react if we were the team at home down to 10 men? would we have the fight and passion shown by Charlton today? let's be honest we would've laid down and died more than likely and conceded more goals.

Have to agree with almost everything he said.

And I've never seen a referee give us as much as the ref did today, even at home!
