Former Leeds, Burnley and QPR defender Clark Carlisle was rushed to hospital early this morning after being hit by a lorry.
Carlisle was airlifted to Leeds General Infirmary with life threatening injuries. The incident took place near Bishopthorpe in North Yorkshire at 7.30am on Monday. The road was then closed to allow the air ambulance to arrive at the scene, Mail Online reported.
The reason for the accident remains unclear, however a police spokeswoman told the website they were “pursuing all avenues”.
During his 16-year career, Carlisle made over 500 appearances for nine clubs.
He has also been praised for his keen intellect, having achieved 10 Grade A GCSEs, and was the first footballer to appear on Channel 4's Countdown.
Following his retirement, he has regularly appeared on ITV as a pundit, including at this summer’s World Cup in Brazil.
He is also a leading ambassador for anti-discrimination group Kick It Out.
On Monday night, North Yorkshire Police would only confirm that a 35-year-old man was struck by a lorry on the A64 south of York.
Burnley and QPR have both tweeted well-wishes to Carlisle and his family.

However, his career has also been dogged by regular bouts of depression and in his autobiography, ‘You don’t know me, but... A footballer’s life’, he reveals how he attempted suicide after injury threatened his playing career.
