Cardiff City agree deal to sell Mats Moller Daehli to Bundesliga's bottom side SC Freiburg

Mats Daehli, Cardiff City’s teenage playmaker, is joining German Bundesliga club Freiburg for a fee thought to be in excess of £2m.

The Bluebirds signed Norwegian international Daehli almost a year ago and he has made 22 League appearances, but has scarcely figured since Ole Gunnar Solskjaer left the club.

It was clear Daehli was set to leave Cardiff during the January transfer window and Freiburg, who are bottom of the Bundesliga, have maintained interest they first showed last summer.

Daehli, 19, made 13 Premier League appearances for Cardiff and scored a dramatic 95th minute equaliser in a 3-3 draw at West Bromwich Albion.

But he has not started a match since September and has often been left out of the matchday squad completely.

Daehli was hampered by a hip injury, but has been unable to break into the Bluebirds team since he recovered from that niggling problem.

It is thought the player and his agent Jim Solbakken were given the go-ahead for talks with Freiburg.

Daehli said last month: “My situation at Cardiff is not optimal at all.

“A month without playing is OK, but it can’t continue like that to be honest. We will have to see about a move in January, but I need to play now.

“I had a chat with Russell Slade, but what was said will have to remain just between the two of us.”

Slade had talks with Daehli and his representatives.

He will not be able to sign officially for Freiburg until the January transfer window opens. German football is on a winter break and Freiburg’s next fixture is at the end of January against Eintracht Frankfurt at home.

Daehli was born in Oslo and had a trial with Chelsea as a schoolboy before joining Manchester United from Norwegian football at the age of 17. He moved to Molde in Norway and signed for Cardiff in January last year.

Daehli made his debut for Cardiff in the FA Cup fourth round victory against Bolton Wanderers at the Reebok Stadium, going on for Joe Mason.

Absolute farce it true. The club has not got a clue and all they seem to be doing (if confirmed) is to be offloading the quality players off the pay roll presumably to save money.

Slade gave the reason for his non appearance as injuries but it looks as if Daehli has been on his way for some time. Daehli, Ravel & Guerra have been ignored. If look as if the clubs policy for sometime has been to offload the top quality players to get them off the wage bill. Seems to be a cost cutting exercise ongoing - remove all the quality and bring in cheap imports from League 1/2 & conference. Lets see what January brings but things are not looking good.

I agree, it was probably out of Slades hands however the concerning thing is what other players are they going to get off the wage bill. It is clear that Guerra, Daehli and Ravel were 3 quality players who did not get a look in at the club. Who will the club get rid of next, Manga, Fabio? the concern is that we will lose our quality and we will be going backwards very quickly to the depths of the lower leagues!

On the contrary, you are ill informed mate.Was man utd young player of the year. Before he chose on his own accord to go to molde because ole promised him first team football. Broke into the senior squad at international level.
Young player of the year in Norway. Man utd tried to resign him he chose ole again when he went to Cardiff. Recently listed amongst the most talented players in the world under the age of 21.
So in actual fact Cardiff is the first club his talent hasn't been appreciated. Slade is the odd one out.

Dreadful. Matts was a really nice guy when I met him and he was potentially one of our greatest ever players, if only he'd been given a chance.

- He is a player we have followed for some years. Therefore we are very happy that he decided to come here. We have gotten ourselfes a very technically gifted, agile and aggressive player who will improve our attack. Although he is only 19 years old, he has experience from the Norwegian national team and the Premier League.

Young player of the year in Man United. Chose to join Molde to develope himself with first team football. Declined to go back to United when they wanted to use the first option and joined City. Not good enough for a Welsh championship team but he will improve the attack of a Bundesliga club.

Great piece of business from Freiburg who will benefit from our horrible desicion to sell him.

Without a doubt this will come back to bite us in the arse. Slade didn't know how to use him anyway. Shit manager and shit decided to sell.

Spot on about the sell on clause, as for the slap I think the puppeteer himself needs one.
