' What went wrong and what hope remains for Cardiff City? '

Cardiff City suffered another dismal defeat and fans shared their disgust by booing and even leaving the stadium when Brentford’s third goal went in.

But what went wrong and what hope remains?

What went wrong?

Despite a bright start from Cardiff, in-form Brentford had done their homework on how to pull the 4-4-2 formation apart and actioned their plan with several stinging counter attacks.

Once behind, Cardiff resorted to punting aimless balls forward which were simply mopped up by the organised Bees defence, who developed an incisive habit of turning defence into attack with two or three killer passes.

For the last 15 minutes of the first-half, Russell Slade’s shambolic team were simply there for the taking and Brentford could really have been 5-0 up at half time.

Put simply, Cardiff had no end product up front, too little movement in midfield and played too many aimless balls out of defence.

Despite a spirited second-half show, this game was well and truly lost in the first 45 minutes.

What went right?

Half time brought about a refreshing change of formation that saw Kadeem Harris come off the right wing and take up a position behind the strikers while Craig Noone moved to the right of a diamond and Peter Whittingham to the left.

Aron Gunnarsson was handed the responsibility of anchoring the middle four and it worked.

The game opened right up and Harris and Whittingham combined nicely down the left to deliver a pinpoint cross onto Craig Noone’s head and into the Brentford net.

At 3-1 Cardiff were back into the game and Kenwyne Jones came on for Federico Macheda in a change that should have taken place at half time.

The giant striker put himself about before muscling his way into the six-yard box and pulling the score back to 3-2 almost instantly.

The Cardiff fans who opted to stay started to believe and Brentford found themselves wasting time to get over the line. Ultimately, though, it was too little, too late.
