FA Youth Cup third-round clash with Cardiff City at The Valley

Charlton’s youngsters suffered disappointment at The Valley on Tuesday night after a spectacular late strike saw the Addicks crash out of the FA Youth Cup at the hands of Cardiff City.

Jamie Veale’s 85th-minute strike from distance proved the difference in a cup tie which the hosts, in truth, enjoyed the better of before suffering late heartbreak at the third-round stage.

Karlan Ahearne-Grant was a notable addition to the academy side’s starting XI.

Having made the step up to Bob Peeters’ first-team squad this season, the 17-year-old forward made a return to the U18s for the vital cup clash against the Bluebirds.

With both sides feeling each other out in the opening exchanges, it was the visitors who provided an early scare when Addicks stopper Dimitar Mitov dwelled on a backpass before nearly being dispossessed by a Cardiff forward, but the Bulgarian kept his cool before finally clearing his lines.

Moments later, Charlton carved out their first chance of the evening when Regan Cook played through Ademola Lookman, who twisted and turned before getting his angled shot away from the edge of the box which flew over the bar.

Then, with 16 minutes gone, the Addicks produced a superb passage of passing play which resulted in Aaron Barnes receiving a ball on the right and delivering a first-time volleyed cross which only just evaded Hanlan who was lurking at the edge of the six-yard box.

The hosts had certainly had the better of the first period as Ahearne-Grant slowly began to assert himself on the game.

The striker was causing all sorts of problems for the Bluebirds’ defence and stung the palms of Joseph Massaro between the sticks with a vicious drive from 20 yards before coming closest to opening the scoring when he nodded George Lapslie’s pinpoint cross inches over the bar three minutes before the break.

Come the second half, Cardiff had come back into the game somewhat, enjoying the lions’ share of possession in the early exchanges.

The Addicks, however, remained a threat up front with Ahearne-Grant continuing to provide a thorn in the side of Cardiff as he skipped past a defender once more to fire in another good effort which Massaro did well to get behind.

Hearts were in mouths with 20 minutes remaining when a whipped free-kick bounced just in front of Mitov, forcing the young custodian to scoop the ball out for a corner from which Cardiff came inches away from taking the lead through an acrobatic effort which dipped just over.

As the clock ticked down, Charlton began to take the game by the scruff of the neck as they went in search of an as-yet elusive winner, and on 83 minutes Lookman’s free-kick looked to be heading in before a blue shirt got a vital touch to divert it away from goal.

But just as the hosts were beginning to apply some pressure, they were hit by a spectacular suckerpunch as Cardiff took the lead.

Veale picked up possession some 30 yards from goal before letting fly with a stunning piledriver, which took a slight deflection and bended into the top right-hand corner.

There was not a thing that Mitov could have done about the goal, which had come against the run of play and all but ended the home side's momentum as the tie slipped away from the young Addicks.
