Reading were awful when we played them, saying that they nearly drew with us with only 10 men.

Good manager in wrong job! Just goes to show being good manager does not mean success at any club?

After having followed so many manager´s jo-jo careers, I´ve come to the conclusion that a manager´s influence on a team´s performance is highly overrated. The most important is that he wins over the wardrobe and makes the players believe in what he´s trying to do. The actual tactics and formations used in a game is subordinate.
I once read an interview with one of Capello´s former players, and he said he was less than impressed by Capello´s actual knowledge about football. But he also said Capello was very good at motivating the players and make them perform.
Besides this, you first of all need luck: luck in games (success builds success) and luck in the transfer marked. It´s hard to predict really, which players will be a hit (one way to make sure SOME will be a hit, is to build a huge squad).
There are so many x-factors a manger cannot control and it´s hard to find anyone who has been successful all the way. It seems to be a good idea, however, to give a manager time. All the sackings in British football is a joke, in my opinion, and just very rarely a change of manager have a positive longterm effect. There has been studies on this, and statistically, sacking a manger more often has a negative than a positive effect.
