Manager defends 'old fashioned' 4-4-2 by maintaining Cardiff adopt similar style to Cristiano Ronaldo, Gareth Bale and co.

Russell Slade has launched a staunch defence of his Cardiff City tactics by claiming Real Madrid play the same way.

The Bluebirds boss has come under fire from fans for adopting an old-fashioned rigid 4-4-2 formation, which has consistently seen his team over-run in midfield by opposition playing more modern systems.

But ahead of the weekend clash with Eddie Howe’s Bournemouth Slade went on the front-foot ... even insisting the European champions adopted his tactics.

Actually, Real Madrid play with Karim Benzema as a lone striker, with Cristiano Ronaldo, James Rodriguez and Gareth Bale rampaging behind him in a modern 4-2-3-1 system.

But Slade maintained: “Bournemouth play in that way, with variations, as we do. Real Madrid have got into Champions League knockout stages playing 4-4-2.

“It’s okay for one of the best teams in the world, but some people seem to think it’s old fashioned for Russell Slade.

“But 4-4-2 is not the same in the modern game as it was years ago.”

Many fans say they find Slade’s Cardiff tactics a switch-off, even though his team have won four out of five under him at home.

They were bored by the 0-0 draw with lowly Rotherham at the weekend, while Cardiff have only mustered one goal in four away matches... despite possessing what some pundits have dubbed the best squad in Championship history.

Our set up is nothing like real madrids what the f**k is he on about!

All we do as a team is spread the ball wide and put balls into the box thats the only threat we seem to have!
Real madrid on the other hand how often do you see them whipping crosses into the box, they play a much more modern game with the wide men cutting in aswell and joining in with the attack.
Like the journo said they play benzema up top with bale ronaldo and rodriguez causing havoc behind him, the only way we could emulate that style imo would be with say le fondre or macheda up top with daehli ravel and noone causing havoc behind the striker but slade is too much of a steady eddy to try that and goes for work horses and defensive players instead

HAHA what a absolute tool that slade is. We play the same tactics but instead of passing to bale,ronaldo,rodriquez etc we pass to kimbo,ralls and macheda!!! That's when we actually complete a pass btw

I often see Casillas humping aimless balls up to Benzema & their defence & midfield constantly giving the ball away & hitting hopeful balls up the flanks to nobody in particular!

The daft thing is we probably in Jones, Whitts, Noone,Matts & Ravel have the attacking element sorted although Gunnar or Ademyemi are not comfortable on the ball as we need in the 4231 system.

But all in all, with the players at his disposal, the highest paid outside the Premier and a Prem class Stadium and facilities we are producing at times a load of shite. I certainly do not want City to lose on Saturday but Slade is having a laugh with some of the things he comes out with.

He is definitely having a laugh if he thinks we are playing attractive football at the moment. Football is a results business, however you need to provide entertainment to keep people happy. People pay good money to be entertained and at the moment we are not be entertained. We are seeing dire abysmal football and unfortunately it is not a one off. Lets hope that it changes.

He never said that the title is misleading read the article properly or watch his press conferance you lot are just looking for more excuses to have a go at Slade.

U always seem to give the opposite opinion to everyone on every post which is interesting. You've got this one spot on, our fans can be pathetic a majority of the time. But I think your annoyance at our fans sometimes clouds your judgement if you don't mind me saying. I can't criticise you for it really because I feel like I'm doing the same because 75% of our fans haven't got a clue or even their own opinion. To be fair, he wasn't seriously comparing Cardiff to Real Madrid any more than I was seriously comparing Cardiff to Rhydyfelin a little earlier. He was trying to explain the flexibility of the modern 4-4-2 formation, and was just using Real Madrid as an example of a team who can adapt their formation during a game.

what he was actually saying was that 4-4-2 is a formation that can be flexible and is not necessarily about having two banks of four and two up front. real madrid may well play what could loosely be defined as being 4-4-2, so the mere fact we play 4-4-2 is not the issue, its about players.

its obvious that even if slade got us promoted, there would be people on here whining about how we're not playing like barcelona. against the odds, he's done very well, and deserves better than sniping, spiteful crap like this.

The results have gone in his favour but lets be honest here the performances have been questionable.

There is a long way to go yet and if the result start reflecting the performances well we might find ourselves in a different fight.
