David Marshall is the best goalkeeper Cardiff City have arguably ever had, but he’s nowhere near the best captain. Now the Scot is not the most vocal of guys, he’s quiet, mild-mannered like a lot of those who end up in goal and his position on the pitch itself does not really help, but the end result is he is just not inspiring his teammates.

He can’t and it shows. Too often the Bluebirds on the pitch feel like a rudderless ship, they need someone to galvanise them, a voice, a presence, a Mark Hudson indeed, but that man is not there. You look around the Cardiff team and you are struck by the lack of leadership material.

Ben Turner maybe at the heart of defence, but you are not completely convinced. Sure, he has the passion and commitment, but is he really a leader of men.

The other obvious choice is Aron Gunnarsson, but he at times is focused on his own wavering for. It is an issue manager Russell Slade himself has identified, don’t be surprised to see potential ‘leadership material’ arrive in the January transfer window.

For me no matter how good the keeper is he shouldn't be captain. They are to far away from the action most of the time.

if I had to pick a captain I would give it to Manga.

Mark Hudson but ooooohhhhh welllllllllll.

I'd give it to Gunnarsson currently. No one else stands out. Morrison in the future but he is 23.

Has to be gunnar no 1 else there as said in report and he has international captain experience also. Seen Alfie having a go at kim on Saturday right where I was sitting for not passing early enough maybe he has captain potential in him?

Club Captain maybe but not matchday Captain,Gunna a fair shout if playing.

Gunnar is the only obvious choice at the moment, but he's not always guaranteed to start.

Part of the problem we've got at the moment is the lack of leaders.
Letting Hudson go was a mistake in my opinion.

The goal keeper should never be captain, whatever level of football we're talking about. I agree Marshall should be club captain but not team captain. I'd go for Gunnar or Big Ben.

Marshall - no way!

Id go with Guna - prob a def starter these days, and proven experience with Iceland.

Nobody else for me is screaming Im a leader. As somebody else has suggested Hudson would have been perfect for me - why oh why I never know

It means bugger all to me. Marshall being captain doesn't mean other players aren't allowed to shout or be vocal. It'd just an arm band and has too much meaning to some people. Gunnar will shout, get stuck in and lead by example no matter what. Whittingham has been captain before but I done recall anyone being too worried about it.

Turner is probably best choice now.........

Turner or gunna but most players should be leaders, I don't buy you need an armband. I captained my side on a Saturday for ten years but I sure as hell weren't the only voice.

Exactly, it's all nonsense. It's just something for the fans to have a go at?

Gunna is the only potential captain material we have.
You are right that every player on the pitch can be a leader and encourage and shout at each other but there needs to be a match day captain to stand up and question the referee.

against Rotherham we were constantly being fouled yet the referee didn't do anything - it is then up to the captain to have a word with him but Marshall cannot do that from 60 yards.

Look how the likes of John Terry, Steve Gerrard and Kevin Nolan constantly keep on at the referee - I bet that gains those teams 10 points a season by the decisions made by the ref.

Only a captain can do that on match day else you run the risk of being booked.

Sorry Marshall is not that person.
