Full-time from Princes Park
John Marquis was on target for Millwall U21s but the young Lions were undone by a double from Cardiff City's Danny Johnson in Monday night's Professional Development League 2 match at Princes Park.

The first half saw the young Lions enjoy the majority of possession after the visitors had carved out a couple of early chances.

Lions keeper Tom King did well to deny Johnson with a smart reaction save from the Cardiff player before a free-kick from Tom James' was cleared, with Johnson heading the loose ball over the bar.

Millwall began to get into their rhythm, however, and on the quarter-hour mark Kyron Farrell's thumping drive was superbly blocked by James.

Marquis directed a header wide of the mark whilst Alfie Pavey was a whisker away from firing Millwall ahead midway through the first-half, but Cardiff keeper Ben Wilson did well to gather the striker's shot at full stretch.

The visitors enjoyed a sustained spell of pressure early in the second-half and it took a couple of smart saves from King to keep out Guido Burgstaller and then a curling effort from Kadeem Harris.

However it was Millwall who made the breakthrough just past the hour-mark courtesy of Marquis' shot that took a slight deflection on its way into the back of the net beyond the reach of Wilson.

The lead was short-lived and barely 70 seconds later Cardiff had pegged Millwall back when Jazz Barnum-Bobb laid the ball off for Johnson, and the latter fired home from close range.

Cardiff nearly grabbed their second goal in as many minutes, only for keeper King to deny Harris by clearing with his feet.

The visitors made a double change, and clearly buoyed by their goal, pressed forward with greater urgency in search of a second goal. This duly arrived on 75 minutes courtesy of Johnson, who took advantage of a slip by Sid Nelson to rifle home at the second attempt after his first shot had been blocked.

Millwall responded positively and Ben Thompson was unlucky with a thunderous drive that flashed narrowly wide from 25 yards, but despite a late spell of pressure the young Lions were unable to grab that elusive leveller.

In fact it was Cardiff who so nearly added a third deep into injury-time, but Theo Wharton's shot flew a fraction wide of the target.

' Millwall U21s squad to face Cardiff City '

Mon 08 Dec 2014

Tonight's team news

Millwall U21s return to Professional Development League 2 action tonight when Neil Harris' side host Cardiff City at Princes Park, home of Dartford FC (7pm).

Unlike The Lions' previous outing against Ipswich Town 11 days ago when experienced midfield duo Jimmy Abdou and Richard Chaplow featured, the squad to face Cardiff is predominantly players aged 19 and under.

Striker John Marquis, back from a loan spell with Cheltenham Town, offers the most experience in a youthful-looking travelling party that also includes Alfie Pavey, fresh from signing a two-and-a-half year contract with The Lions on Saturday.

Millwall squad: King, Siafa, Casey, Webb, Thompson, Wood, Marquis, Farrell, Pavey, Nelson, O'Brien, Twardek, Girling, Rylah, Philpot, Peter.

He's alive !! :o :o

Maybe Slade is giving him a chance like he gave Kimbo. If so Daehli clearly isn't going to be featuring any time soon.

Neil Harris felt that there was plenty to be positive about after Millwall U21s were pipped by the odd goal in three against Cardiff City in Monday night's Professional Development League 2 match at Dartford FC.

John Marquis marked his return from a loan spell at Cheltenham Town with the game's opening goal on 62 minutes, but Cardiff responded almost straight from the kick-off through Danny Johnson, who then added his - and the visitors' - second goal of the night to secure victory with 15 minutes remaining.

"I thought that we were outstanding in the first half on a very heavy pitch," Chopper told millwallfc.co.uk. "The surface wasn't conducive to the flowing football that we like to play and we had to go a bit more direct, but I thought that we were really, really good, we got a lot of the second balls and created lots of clear cut chances in the first 45 minutes especially.

"In the second half we didn't hit the same levels; Cardiff came into the game a lot more but even so, we took the lead and they still hadn't really caused us any major problems.

"I thought we were comfortable, but then we let them back in very quickly and that is something the lads here have to learn to manage our game. By that I mean that the buzz and the real highs you get when you go ahead have to be managed in such a way that they still concentrate and do their jobs properly, keep playing the right way and not give up the advantage.

Cheers for the updates! How did Burgstaller perform? Harris? Is Danny Johnsen soon becoming the answer to our problems up front?
