" ARE CARDIFF PLAYERS WORKING HARD ENOUGH? "

By Terry Phillips

Work hard, play hard...

Rotherham, who are hovering just above the Championship drop zone, will have got on the coach to leave here bitterly disappointed not to have taken all three points. And you could hardly disagree with them, to be honest.

Boss Steve Evans, who defied Russell Slade in the League One playoff final earlier this year, was adamant his side had played the Bluebirds off the park. And he was right, up to a point.

Rotherham worked harder than Cardiff in all areas. They pressed the home side hard, giving them little time to settle and the Bluebirds were really thrown off their game by it.

The Millers had the best chances too. David Marshall in the home goal had the more difficult saves to make and Cardiff had to rely on good fortune when Marshall pushed Alex Ravell’s header onto the bar in the second half.

Who needs to do more?

Defensively you would have to say Cardiff have looked pretty resolute of late with this their third clean sheet in four games.

The big problem here for Cardiff came in midfield with frontmen Adam Le Fondre and Kenwyne Jones receiving little or no service whatsoever. Too often the Bluebirds midfield under-performs as individuals and as a unit. Peter Whittingham was reserved again, Aron Gunnarsson nowhere near his best, whilst Craig Noone out wide had a few moments of threat, but nowhere near enough.

The only change from the Watford game from Slade was to bring in Kim Bo-kyung for the injured Anthony Pilkington. Did the South Korean, who has had limited opportunities so far this season, stake his claim to the shirt here? Absolutely not. Very early on Kim showed a few moments which suggested he was going to make an impact, but he faded very badly and was a mere observer for far too long.

A disappointing afternoon for Cardiff and a very disappointing afternoon for Kim.

Even though I would rather see Dhaeli start every time, its unfair to single out Kimbo who was no better or worse than anyone else.

The answer to these questions, Annis, are easy - No!

Kimbo did a job defensively, but contributed very little in the offensive play, and also he gives away the ball far to easily. At home against Rotherham, I think the approach was too defensive. The game screamed for ballplayers, and we hardly had anyone of the pitch. The subs should have been in the midfield and made earlier. Macheda in for Jones was not what I was looking for.

If the players are not motivated & the manager cannot motivate them then we're in trouble!
And Saturday wasn't the first time.

Do our management team work hard enough ?

Do we do any home work on the opposition ?

No need for two 6'4" stoppers at centre half. Drop one and put Connolly in. Fabio at full back, that would have pushed the whole game 15 meters further up field.

Why when we have a huge squad does Slade not freshen it up a bit?

The work ethics seems to have been the problem for quite some time now. Players not bleeding for the red dragon shirt? The fans are certainly not. Actually, I think it´s the whole atmosphere around the club that is the biggest problem, also for the former manager. The rebrand looks to have been very damaging. One result, is the fans having very little patient when things are not going smooth on the pitch.
