Whittingham Yesterday....

Sun Dec 07, 2014 4:32 pm

Yet again whittingham yesterday was ineffective in centre midfield, was anonymous and yet again went missing and this happens way too often for me. Ive said it before and will say it again i cant see us getting promoted if he is going to be playing for us all season as a centre midfielder in a standard 442 system. We need a replacement for him january imo because in this system and with whitts we lack a spark and creativity in this side and thats exactly what was missing yesterday

Whitts has usually been the first name on the team sheet for Malky, Ole and now Slade.

Whether he should play every game is a different question but all of our recent managers have felt that he should play almost every game.

Personally I think that he deserves to start in the home games but I would definitely give a lot of thought to leaving him out for the majority of the away games where our truly appalling amount of possession means that he is much less effective.

A Whittingham without the ball is more a liability than an asset.

Unfortunately when there is as little movement in the team as there was yesterday it's Whitts who ends up looking stupid.

How many times did he look up only to see a fullback standing 10 yards behind him as the only one looking for the ball ? As usual Whitts is the first person to be criticised. Maybe favourites like Noone need to take some responsibility for simply not looking for the ball early enough.

Agree, noone gets a free pass around here. Whitts is a much more important and valuable player but people always nitpick his game. What the hell did noone do to get away with everything? He hardly ever scores or has an assist. It's as if as long as you run around and look busy ( see lefondre) fans are happy with players never mind that they hardly ever do something useful with the ball.

Whitts is the only player that takes responsibility.....But the main thing from yesterday there was no movement

Noone does come short to get it, but thats not what whitts is looking for, he is looking for a diagonal run.
Noone is getting the ball so deep he is not doing anything with it.
Kim was playing statues.
In this system Gunner should be to the side of Whitts
Alf wasn't coming short because KJ was in that space, but he hasn't made one run across the line like Chops used to
KJ- enough has been said, it was the first real cold day yesterday and a long winter ahead
Brayford tried the overload
Connolly is a ball playing centre half

Turner and Morrison both think they are Beckenbuer

Couldn't agree more mate. Unfortunately some people are to blind too see it, when Whitts lifts his head up and every fucker is stood still, the only option he has is to go side or backwards, which in turn the fans grumble about him being too negative. Down the years we have all witnessed Whitts having the vision and passing ability to open teams up and create, if he has the movement from the wide players and front men then maybe we'll see more of this part of his game return.

I agrew whitts has got a good range of passing and if theres no movement then thats not good then. But for me in a 442 system like slade wants to play whitts isnt a complete centre midfielder. He got good passing but lacks any urgency, hes too slow and we need a box to box dynamic player for that role and whitts isnt that type of player.

Gerrard and lampard both box to box complete midfielders couldn't play together, They both had complimenting partners who sat in there. So is the problem Gunner ? Or is he being told not to be more than 10m from Whitts. My feeling is gunnar and Adeyemi will run into brick walls or lose then ball in dangerous areas.

Yeh thats it mate i think the partnership dosent compliment eachother we got adeyemi or gunnarson who can be the physical presence in there who is more defensive minded but then we need an attacking minded box to box midfielder in there then too and imo whitts isnt that player and needs to be replaced in january if we are to improve this team...
I would be happy with whitts in the team if we had a number 10 ahead of him in a 4-5-1 or 4-2-3-1 but in a standard 4-4-2 and as a complete midfielder whitts isnt good enough imo

For me Whitts may as well not played as he was non existent, but I suppose many others were as well.

I probably jinxed him as I put a bet on Whittingham to score first and City to win 2-0 at 45/1. Sorry.

Exactly and him being non existent happens way too often! I hope slade got a replacement lined up for him for january or we can forget about promotion

Think whitts takes way more stick than he deserves on here. 350+ games surely shows he has something about him?

Agreed Blue Magic! Total journeyman! I've had a guts full of watching him week after week and getting a free pass no matter how dire he is, and that's frequently! Enough is enough; I've cancelled my season ticket. The team is shit and hes the reason for it. Cue fawning Whitts sycophants spouting blood!

Noone is awful
Kim was better than I thought he'd be
Gunnar should be pushing forward when Whitts has the ball deep and vice versa
Alf wasn't coming short because every long ball was aimed at him and not KJ

I am presuming you're being sarcastic as of all the players in the squad Whitts is the one who never gets a free pass  he could score a hat trick (and has done) and still been moaned about because he missed a tackle

If you're not being sarcastic then I give up and I clearly don't know anything about football

No not being sarcastic at all. He's not for me. As I said hes got his legion of fans but he spoils my enjoyment. Each to their own, I'll spend my Saturday's down the pub

A good point and I agree, the thing that got me wound up yesterday was when we did have it we couldn't make any use of it. Connolly is definitely NOT an attacking full back & barely gets forward meaning little option and Rotherham doubling up on Kimbo. Bradford obviously has far less confidence going forward on the left side, as he's predominantly right footed, so the same thing happens to Noone.
Add to that the fact our movement was non existent and there's the main reasons why Whittingham was non effective. I don't disagree that because of these factors Adeyemi may have been worth half an hour ?
