' RUSSELL SLADE SPEAKS OUT HONESTLY/HOW BAD WE WERE '

Saturday 6th December 2014

Cardiff City boss Russell Slade: 'I didn't see that performance coming!'

Russell Slade admitted his Cardiff City team were poor as they drew 0-0 with Rotherham at home

Russell Slade admitted his Cardiff City team were ‘well below par’ after their goalless draw against Rotherham United.

The visitors have not won for eight Championship matches but they were the better team in long spells and Slade said: “I am really disappointed with that. Everybody in our changing room is disappointed.

“We earned a terrific result at Watford, trained really well this week, but sometimes a manager doesn’t see that sort of performance coming. We were below par.

“That’s frustrating for all of us.

“We created very little and failed to get the ball to wide areas quickly enough. Our ball speed was poor. To be fair to Rotherham they pressed us well at times.

“They were compact but we had to get the ball wide and get quality balls into their penalty area. That didn’t happen and we didn’t produce enough quality and that’s something we have done over recent weeks.

“We deviated from our game plan and what we are good at.”

City are unbeaten in four matches and Slade was quick to reply when a question was asked about his team's consistency.

“There is no lack of consistency,” he said. “I have had nine games as manager and we have won five, drawn three, lost two. That’s fairly consistent.

"This was our third clean sheet in four games. But are we the finished article? Of course not. Do we have a lot of work to do? Yes. Do we need to improve in every area of the team if we are going to get to where we need to get to? Of course.

“We are averaging almost two points a game in the nine matches since I became manager. We are on track with an awful lot of work to do. Maybe that’s a good sign, but we will have to wait until the end of the season to know that.

“The important thing is that everybody is trying to get it right. We had a terrific week on the training ground, but sometimes that doesn’t transfer into matches.”

Rotherham manager Steve Evans said his team deserved to win and he described Welshman Tom Lawrence as ‘unplayable during the first half.’

Wrexham-born Lawrence, who has been in Wales squads without earning his first senior cap, is on loan with Rotherham from Leicester and Evans said: “He is a smashing, highly talented player. Cardiff could not deal with him.

“During the first half he was unplayable. He showed he should be playing at Premier League level.

“Overall, we played some superb football as a team, our passing and movement was exceptional. Cardiff City is a big club with great tradition and are just out of the Premier League. Yet we outpassed them, dominated them and go away disappointed we haven’t taken all three points.

“We had the chances and didn’t take them.”

I blame the players attitude not the manager.

He is the only one who didn't see it coming then.

I've noticed he loves to roll off stats in his interviews to back up what a good manager he is. Don't wash with me.

Exactly yet Slade always sugar coats it.

Do us customers get value for money? No cos the football is dire.

5 wins, 3 draws and 2 defeats in 9 games.

Something just doesnt quite add up does it?

Took him 70 mins to realize it was poor....A few fans reminded him at half time.

Connolly is not even fully fit.....FFS

He's improving....

At least he brought Fabio on and moved Brayford to right back straight away.

Today's performance isn't the only thing he didn't see coming. Last week it took the sum total of all our fans shouting at him before he realised he needed to make the same switch.

Is that progress?

The buck stops with the manager. Always has, always will.
Slade has been here long enough to get to players attitudes right. If not he has a big enough - and on paper good enough - squad to change it.

City have been dire all season. The midfield of gunnar and white is dreadful. Totally out played every week.. also that's y fans are staying away. I think there was only 15'000 at most in stadium. It was empty

He's working from the back, which is boring to watch, but will pick up points. The defence is better and midfield support of the defence is much better, now he needs to balance a good defence with some attacking in midfield and some chances for the Strikers.

Pullis did this last season and was able to organise the defence and then push on with improvements upfront, can Slade do the same ???!

Christ is he blind?

I saw it coming and so did thousands of others in the stadium.

In fact I've seen the same sort of performances since Russell arrived.

You could argue that you didn't see the result coming but the performance was unfortunately the most predictable thing about yesterday afternoon.

Don't talk so much sense it's prohibited on here

I disagree, Pulis believes in hard-work all over the pitch not just defensive organization. The work he was getting Chamakh to do for the team no other manager had done before, he turned him into a really good player with his pressing of the defenders, and also started scoring goals....I would argue Pulis worked on the pressing system in his rigid 4-4-2 rather than just actual work on defence

How can you say the performance was coming after Watford?
If anything you expect performance to improve or at least be comparable to that game! As for score that was far away from what 99.9% of people on here expected?

We were incredibly lucky to win at Watford. Did you go to that game? Did you see them have one kicked off the line, hit the post and batter us for the entire second half?

Did you see them have almost 80% of the possession and did you see us unable to string two passes together for the entire second half?

If you had, you would have realised that yesterday's performance was entirely predictable.

Yes we did but we deserved something from game as pointed out they had scored in every home game in fact 2.3 goals per game.

Get the ball out wide as quickly as possible and get the ball into their box. Russell's simply footballing philosophy. Lower league tactics and football won't wash in the Championship and is dire to watch. Every time Marshall had the ball you could have thrown a small blanket over all the outfield players. It was like going back 10 years. Never keeping possession and looking like a mediocre lower league outfit. Absolute rubbish. I left the game against Reading feeling more depressed than I have done after some resounding defeats. Frankly regardless of the stats - I could achieve a decent set of results with this squad - the sooner Slade goes the better......and if he takes Tan with him that would be perfect.
