' Slade sets New Year target '

Cardiff City manager Russell Slade wants his team to be in the top six before heading into the January transfer market.

Slade has enjoyed a good start to life in south Wales, guiding the Bluebirds to five wins in eight games since taking over from Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in October. The run has lifted Cardiff from 15th in the Championship to eighth and they are now six points behind table-toppers Derby County going into this weekend's home clash with Rotherham. The promotion hopefuls are only two points outside the play-offs and Slade insists the top six is where they want to be after the festive period. "Our medium term goal, which I set many, many weeks ago was to come out of the Christmas period into January with a top six slot," the former Leyton Orient boss told BBC Sport Wales. "Whether we are able to do that Saturday, which would be wonderful, I don't know, but a win is going to take us that little bit closer." Cardiff spent £14million on new players over the summer following their relegation from the Premier League but Slade is looking to add "a couple" of his own signings when the transfer window reopens next month. "If we can add a couple to the group things will be a lot better," he added. "We're going in the right direction...but I think there's lots of work still to be done and a lot of improvement still to come from the group that we've got."
