Which Championship clubs can expect to receive a Transfer Embargo?

With Championship clubs due to submit their Fair Play information to the Football League by 1 December, it is worth considering which clubs are likely to have breached the rules and the likely impact.

Looking at the Championship clubs, 9 are viewed as being ‘Likely’ or ‘Very Likely’ to receive a Transfer Embargo from January.

The Football League will look back at the season 2013/14 and determine which clubs exceeded the permitted loss limits for that season. During 2013/14 clubs were able to make losses up to £3m for the season (rising to a maximum of £8m if the owner was prepared to put their hand in their pocket to inject equity [i.e. not loans] into the club to cover the difference).

Some expenditure is excluded (such as charitable donations, promotion bonuses, and youth development expenditure). N.B. Championship Youth Development costs are unlikely to be much over £700k.

How on earth are we in profit this season? Wasn't it reported on here recently that Tan is putting in money to cover losses. That is what I would expect given the huge fall in our income following relegation and very little sign that we have significantly reduced costs.

I think you are being too optimistic.Judging by the statements made by the club last season it made a profit of about £10 million. That was after receiving some £62 mill of Sky money . This season we will get £23 m of sky money ( the parachute payment). So our income for this year is £39m down on last year before we even think about the falling gates and loss of commercial income following relegation. Allowing for last years £10m profit that means we have to find at least £29m in extra income/reduced costs in order to break even this year. We have raised £20m plus in player sales but have spent £10m plus on new ones. And we won't get all the money in from those sales this year. It will be spread over several years. As for wages we have a bigger squad this year than last year. Hopefully there were relegation clauses in contracts to allow us to reduce some if not all players wages . But I doubt that this would be enough to bring expenditure in line with income. I' think we will make a significant loss this season and could be in FFP trouble this time next year

i can't see many clubs getting transfer bans to be honest. i'd be shocked if a substantial number of clubs got caught up in this.

though if you want clubs to comply with the regulations, sadly that must happen.

I honestly can't see any fines or bans surviving the first legal challenge. At the end of the day the FA is trying to tell owners how to run their business. If a club loses £10 mill but the debt is sustainable then they are viable. Company law makes any fines or bans therefore illegal. Although I can see what they are trying to achieve
