Former Cardiff City captain Steven Caulker: I never saw that side of Malky Mackay and why I believe the Bluebirds can win promotion

QPR defender Steven Caulker tells WalesOnline about his time at the Bluebirds that ended in great disappointment

Malky Mackay's Cardiff City captain has broken his silence on the text-gate scandal that engulfed the former Bluebirds boss.

And he has insisted there was never a hint of the side of the Scot that has seen him come under an FA investigation for offensive and reportedly racist messages sent between him and former No.2 Iain Moody.

Steven Caulker was made skipper by Mackay for Cardiff's Premier League campaign, a season that started with great promise but ended in relegation and controversy following the manager's dramatic fall-out with owner Vincent Tan.

That has since included the revelations over Mackay's messages, the row over which has rumbled on and recently resurfaced following his appointment as Wigan chief.

Yet Caulker, who left the Bluebirds for Premier League QPR over the summer, has launched something of a defence of the man who paid £9m to bring him to Cardiff City Stadium and whose dismissal he claimed was a turning point in the club's attempts to stay in the top-flight.

Asked for his views on Mackay, Caulker said: “For me Malky was always honest and up front and great to me.

“What he said or what he's done I've only seen what the media are reporting, but I never saw that side of him. For me he was always a genuine and honest guy.”

Mackay was axed a year ago after a very public fall-out with Tan, Cardiff in 16th at the time before Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's appointment.

Caulker is back at the foot of the Premier League with QPR, the Hoops succumbing to their seventh straight defeat away from home this season in Tuesday night's 2-0 loss at Swansea City.

And while he believes Harry Redknapp's side are better equipped to avoid the drop, he pointed towards Mackay's exit as a key moment.

More: The missing Cardiff City outcasts

The England cap said: “I think we are probably a better team, but it was a good team last year. It was just unfortunate after the change of manager that we struggled to find form under him. We dropped from something like 12th when he took over to the bottom. That was unfortunate but here we have players and manager with experience which will help us which is a lot different to Cardiff,

“But it was a good experience for me at Cardiff. You have highs and lows during your career and hopefully I've got the lows out of the way and I can go onto bigger and better things.”

Caulker was kept on as matchday skipper under Solskjaer before it was clear the Norwegian would have to plan for life without the former Tottenham man following relegation.

And while he expressed an admiration for the ex-Manchester United striker, he admitted he was not surprised to see him leave after a disappointing start to life back in the Championship – but backed the Bluebirds to have a crack at promotion under new man Russell Slade.

He said: “It's difficult because the owner wants results and if the manager's not getting them he's not afraid to chop him. It was unfortunate because Ole was a great guy and I'm sure he'll get another job soon.

“But Cardiff have definitely got a chance of coming back up, especially under the new manager with the way they've won five home games from five. I'd love to see them in the Premier League again.”

Exaclty if Malky was as bad as he was being portrayed surely Caulker would be picking cotton in the depths of the CCS ?

Steve come on in thousands of texts just 3 were dodgy. He didn't want to pay Malky off so with his wealth hired someone to find dirt on him no matter what. Tan is a vindictive tw*t of a dictator and that is what I will always believe. If you want to put some sugar and a cherry on top of Twats head that is your parogative. Any way see you for the Bournmouth game as long as Carlos ain't banned me :laughing6: :laughing6:

Malky Mackay was 'genuine, honest and great for me' at Cardiff, claims QPR defender Steven Caulker

Steven Caulker claims Malky Mackay was 'genuine and honest' at Cardiff

The manager has been embrolied in controversy after 'completely unacceptable' texts were exposed by Sportsmail

Mackay was sacked by Vincent Tan before being appointed Wigan manager

Steven Caulker has insisted he always found Malky Mackay to be a 'genuine and honest guy' during their time together at Cardiff.
The 22-year-old QPR defender was appointed team captain by Mackay at Cardiff last season but the Scot was sacked halfway through the campaign after falling out with the club's Malaysian owner Vincent Tan.
Mackay later became embroiled in controversy after an exchange of text messages between him and Cardiff's former head of recruitment Iain Moody was made public and the Football Association are currently investigating the matter.

QPR defender Steven Caulker insists he never had any problems with Malky Mackay at Cardiff

Mackay has courted controversy after a string of inappropriate text messages were exposed by Sportsmail
The former Cardiff manager admitted sending three 'completely unacceptable' text messages in August - but denied he was racist, homophobic or sexist.
The FA has taken more than three months to reach a conclusion and in that time Mackay has been appointed manager of Sky Bet Championship club Wigan after 11 months out of football.
Caulker, who joined QPR last summer following Cardiff's relegation from the Barclays Premier League, said: 'For me, Malky was always a genuine and honest guy.
'What he said or what he's done, I've only seen what the media are reporting - but I've not seen that side of him. He was great for me.'
Caulker believes his time at Cardiff, where he was eventually relegated under the inexperienced stewardship of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, will help him in Rangers' own battle against relegation this season.

Wigan chief Dave Whelan (left) has been criticised for appointing Mackay as manager at the DW Stadium
Harry Redknapp's side dropped into the bottom two after Tuesday night's 2-0 defeat at Swansea and have yet to collect a Barclays Premier League point away from home in seven league matches.
Caulker said: 'It means nothing where we're at at the moment. It's about keeping pace with the pack, winning our home games and seeing where it takes us.
'The good thing is that the players here are experienced, which is a lot different from Cardiff last year, and a manager who's also very experienced.'

What about Ibby Farah who came out publicly and said Malky did have racist characteristics?

Seem to have forgotten about that. it could be, that Malky respected his favourites whilst showed a lack of respect to those he saw less significant.

Fantastic he says he never saw it? But fact is malky sent txts so his observation is worthless!! And he's English, txts were directed At ethnic players so why would he see it? Just because he didn't see anything doesn't prove sfa about malky! FACT malky sent txts end of story!

As for arse lickers comment? That's from someone who only believes his opinion is only right one!

Isnt this the problem with Malky though, he either likes a player or he doesnt. He knew who he had to suck up to and behave around. It was the lower fringe players that seemed to be the butt of the jokes and considering he was supposed to be the leader of this club its laughtable. It amazes me who people continue to try and support him. He disgarced this club and I for one wish he never came near this club.

From my experience people who are racially inclined are usually nice as pie to the other persons face but make racially motivated comments behind their backs, this seems to be the case here.
If you manage a Prem football club needless to say you need to be squeaky clean, unfortunately Malky Mackay didn't cover his arse enough and was found out.
Vincent Tan is not as stupid as some people believe and if he pays your wages then it would be wise to play a straight game or face the inevitable consequences which Malky is now doing.

so on that theory we should suspect white managers that makes one of their black players captain of the football team.

If this theory was based on fact, Malky has played-out this manoeuvre perfectly in making the Caulker captain of the team, therefore in doing so gaining Caulker's trust implicitly so the behind the scenes racism can be even more of a thrill to the racially inclined.

If he were to slate Tan, he'd end up in a legal battle, which of course would be wavered if he embarrassed himself in the media by saying sorry to Tan and explain how great he is.
Off topic, I hope he leaves before we end up 250 million in debt. Horrible man!

Whatever a Prem managers racial , homophobic or any other feelings are the nature of his job would forbid him to come out with those feelings in public especially in the company of the players he manages/controls. In public he needs to be seen as squeaky clean and unbiased (which he was), but in private he could feel more relaxed about letting his true feelings come out and could/did send texts to trusted friends and those texts could/did have racial tones to them.
He did make racially motivated comments privately to his assistant along the lines of there being plenty of dogs in Cardiff to keep Kim from getting hungry for a good while. Obviously to say those things in public would ruin his chances of ever being trusted by any player whether black white jewish or whatever. He made Caulker captain because he was the best man for the job in his opinion therefore acting professionally in the gaze of the public, what his private thoughts were regarding Caulkers ethnic origins were is anybody's guess.
What's not in doubt is the fact texts trivialising his bosses ethnic background and also some players under his management were subject to the brunt of his racial undertones.

being called a name by friends ect in public is not the same as calling ethnic employees names behind their backs whilst in a managerial capacity! why do people still defend the undefencible??? facts are he sent txts with racial overtones on work equipement about people he was suppose to support!
