Former Cardiff City defender Andrew Taylor is backing Malky Mackay to guide Wigan to safety despite Saturday's loss at Sheffield Wednesday leaving them second from bottom in the Championship.

Latics drew 1-1 with Middlesbrough in Mackay's first match in charge but failed to build on that when surrendering a lead given to them by Chris McCann at Hillsborough.

However, Taylor remains confident in the new manager's ability, having previously played under the Scot at Watford and Cardiff.

"This manager can definitely get the best out of us," the defender told the club website. "He's come in here and, having worked with him before as well, I know he'll instil a team unity, he'll get us all going in the right direction and no doubt we'll start climbing the table."

Taylor added: "We're hurt, very disappointed, our professional pride is at stake and none of us want to be in a relegation fight.

"But, at the end of the day, that's where we are at the moment and we've got to understand that - now it's about working hard and digging ourselves out of the situation we're in."

I see that name and I instantly have nightmares of him running after Sterling like he had skids down his legs at Anfield.
