' Wigan plot move for Ryan Giggs if Malky Mackay leaves '

Wigan Athletic chairman Dave Whelan has placed Ryan Giggs on his managerial hit list if he is forced to terminate the contract of Malky Mackay.

Mackay only joined the club last week but an ongoing inquiry from the FA threatens to make it one of the shortest managerial stints in history. Allegations that he sent homophobic, racist and sexist messages whilst manager of Cardiff may land him a lengthy ban from management.

As part of the deal that saw him arrive at the DW Stadium, Wigan inserted a 'protection' clause that will allow them to part company if he is eventually found guilty. It means Whelan could soon be looking for a new manager.

Whelan is preparing for such a predicament and has drawn up a list of potential replacements on which Giggs is believed to feature. The appointment would see Nicky Butt also leave his coaching role at Manchester United to become Giggs' number two.

Giggs has recently spoken of his desire to become a manager in the future, which suggests he would be prepared to leave Manchester United for the first time in his professional career.
