Russell Slade - We're Still A Work In Progress
Manager Russell Slade was obviously delighted to see Cardiff pick up their fourth consecutive home victory in our two one win over Reading this weekend, but was quick to point out the side remain a work in progress.
Speaking to the Official Site following the full time whistle the reason the gaffer was quick to play the 'progress' card was although he was happy with the result he knows the performance wasn't exactly a 'classic' and he knows we could've played and started a lot better than we did.
'It wasn't a classic for us. In the first 15 minutes we didn't set our stall out as well as I wanted to so we had to grind our way into the game. That's exactly what we did. We knew we could pose a threat from set plays, they've conceded from set plays and we felt we could be a force - it turned out to be that way.'
Slade adds that 'of course' the penalty just before half time was a boost and made things look more rosy than they had been, but he felt second half we were again off the pace and it wasn't the way 'we wanted to go about it' and he was disappointed with how they worked their way back into the match.
'We wanted a solid professional performance, a clean sheet and on top of that we missed two or three really good opportunities to extend our lead.'
The gaffer goes on to say that his biggest disappointment from the game was the goal we let in as for him scoring twice and getting the clean sheet on the back of a less than 'classic' performance would've been a decent 'job done' for him but we couldn't hold out for that and it almost led to us dropping two points as they got some belief back.
Ending the interview with fixtures coming thick and fast now the gaffer confirmed that he can either change personnel and make changes to our shape, but for him he wants to find the combination that gives us 'steel' so we are strong, especially away from home because for him away games aren't about the 'beautiful game' it's about making sure you play when you can but you grind out valuable away points and that's what we're failing to do at the moment.
'It's about digging in and putting bodies on the line like we did at Birmingham. We need to create opportunities as well - unfortunately at Birmingham we missed them.'

It doesn't look as if home matches are about the beautiful game either.

That's because he doesn't pick any players capable of playing the beautiful game...
