Cardiff City 2-1 Reading: Bluebirds boss Russell Slade pleased with three points but knows his side performed nowhere near their best

The Bluebirds led 2-0 at half time but had to endure a nervy finale as 10-man Reading pulled a goal back

Alex Pearce's horror show kept Russell Slade's dream start to home life at Cardiff going – but even the Bluebirds boss admitted his side's 2-1 win over Reading was no classic.

And now he will demand a change of fortunes on the road as they look to end a winless away streak at Watford.

Slade's side toiled their way to a fourth straight win at Cardiff City Stadium since taking over from Ole Gunnar Solskjaer despite Pearce handing the hosts an own goal and then a penalty for Peter Whittingham to convert before being sent off.

Michael Hector's late strike made it a nervous finish to a game that should have been killed off well before, and Slade was left angered by his defence for failing to keep a first home clean-sheet under his watch.

But, as Cardiff made it five on the bounce on their own patch, Slade said: “We can't ask for much more at home but now we have to find that steel when we're away.

“We knew this wasn't a classic, we didn't set our stall out and we had to grind our way into the game."

Slade added: “We knew we could be a threat from set-plays and so it proved but the second period against ten men was not the way we wanted it go go.

“We wanted a clean sheet and a professional performance but we missed good opportunities to kill the game off and to concede was the biggest disappointment. If we had won 2-0 and not scored again it would have been job done.

“We got the win and I'm sure most fans will accept if we're getting the three points there will be times we don't always perform.”
