We have the right to voice our opinions in any way we please, whether verbally, in writing or both. We have the right to be heard; and to hear the opinions of others without being obliged to believe what they say. For the most part UK citizens have always had this right. We are lucky enough to live in a democratic society that believes in the rights, the human rights, of its people. Everyone has the right to their opinion, just as you have the right not to listen.
Political correctness encourages offence to be taken where none is intended and is a serious threat to free speech. Despite being portrayed to be in the name of tolerance, political correctness is completely intolerant of anyone who does not act in a politically correct fashion.

People are so quick to take offence to the slightest comment or opinion. We live in an age of social media and if people don't understand others have vastly different points of view then they will continue to be outraged every single day.
Thing is, most of the complaints about insulting language or behaviour are from the people that the insults are not aimed at. People enjoy getting defensive over an issue that doesn't concern them.
People think it is their duty to protect people, which isn't a bad thing. For example I think black people can handle being insulted on their own. They can deal it in their own way. When I get insulted, I don't expect someone to defend me. They don't need some white little teenager running to save them as soon as insults start being thrown about.
I think political correctness was good which has allowed us be more accepting. But now it rules peoples lives.

Is there a specific point here or just a general, unfocused gripe?
Political Correctness, along with that other great despotic terror, Health and Safety, are two things that are so easy to jump on as ruining society that it frustrates the hell out of me.
Sometimes health and safety rules can be too pedantic, too petty, no system is perfect. As a person who has lived abroad in various countries you see things that are absolutely shocking. You might appreciate Health and Safety a little more.
Political Correctness - I'm assuming there is something specific that has set you off here. I'm guessing the Wigan thing but could well be wrong. Doesn't matter. Again, I'm not going to say that PC doesn't sometimes go too far. But when you talk about people being offended by things I suspect you'd find it very difficult to come up with a situation where you didn't know that what you were saying was offensive. Try not saying offensive things in the first place. Have a think about what you are saying before you say it. Try putting yourself in the other person's shoes.
Actually, I can think of an occasion. When I lived in Korea there was a Korean-American friend of mine who asked me to stop using the word Oriental when referring to east Asian people. I was surprised because the term is not offensive in Britain (as far as I'm aware) but apparently, in America, it has pejorative connotations. So fine, I stopped using it. I didn't take offence at him being offended.
The things that people become irate about astounds me.
Health and Safety, Political Correctness, Feminism - all things people complain about yet without them society would be far worse off.
Without Health and Safety you have a place like Korea where money overrides safety concerns and people pay with their lives.
Political Correctness is just another way of saying treat other people as you yourself would expect to be treated.
Feminism. How can anyone not be a feminist? It simply means believing that women are equal to men and should be treated accordingly.
Within each of these things there are aspects that may go too far - so specific complaints I can accept. But general moaning is lazy and thoughtless. It's like labelling the army as homicidal murderers based on a few bad eggs.

'Political correctness surely encourages people not to cause offence when exercising their right to freedom speech? Say what you want but think about how your saying it. If a points valid and worth making you shouldnt need to fall back on insults and slurs?

One mans slur is another mans descriptive word. I remember Alan Hanson sticking up for what he called "coloured players" and was slammed for it everywhere, he clearly wasn't being nasty, racist or intentionally offensive yet there was an outcry for him to publicly apologise. I think they wanted to be called "black" or "people of colour". I remember one high profile tween stating "What a discrace! Im not coloured - im black". Funny, as dont think ive ever seen an actual black person before, if we are to be accurate we should say brown shouldnt we?
Its all a load of bollocks if you ask me. Racism is all about context. People love to be offended. Is it racist if 50cent says nig*er?

On this subject- saw a piece on fox news this afternoon about PC groups demanding that ' the little green man ' on zebra crossings should be changed so that if doesn't offend women OR - wait for it - cross gender people who may feel left out because they are not represented on the lights.
What the F##K is going on in the world? Cant we round up all of these PC tosspots and and let our army practice new weapon technology on them? F##king idiots.

I agree Racism is about context. No one should be labelled racist because their vocabulary is out of date. Dialogue should take place.
In the 70s and 80s Coloured was often used, in a non-racist way. It is only in the past 20 years that Black has been defined more clearly. For Hanson this was just an vocabulary misuse. After reading the origins of the word "Coloured" and how it was used by the apartheid system in S.Africa, does one really appreciate how offensive it really is, and why it is so despised.

This has all happened because the last Labour government wanted to reduce unemployment by creating more public sector jobs. Therefore, instead of a manager having different roles like equality, discrimination and health and safety to deal with, we suddenly had separate managers for each of these areas as well as the original managers. In most cases there isn't enough work for these new roles, so to try and justify their jobs they create new areas of racism, discrimination and health and safety hazards. The results are we can know no longer use the name blackboard in schools, it has become a chalkboard, and children can not be exposed to any risk, such as playing conkers. I think the country has gone bonkers.
