FA say no assurances given over Malky Mackay investigation to Wigan Athletic
Ex-Cardiff City boss Mackay was unveiled on Wednesday with chairman Dave Whelan suggesting charges against him were unlikely. In a fresh twist, Whelan has been accused of anti-semitism after remarks defending his appointment.
The Football Association (FA) has moved to quash any suggestion they have given Wigan Athletic assurances over the outcome of their investigation into ex-Cardiff City manager Malky Mackay.
Mackay was unveiled as Wigan boss on Wednesday despite an ongoing investigation into him and former head of recruitment Iain Moody over alleged racist, sexist and homophobic messages they are accused of sending during their time with the Bluebirds.
Wigan chairman Dave Whelan had suggested at Wednesday's unveiling that charges against his new boss were unlikely.
But the FA issued a statement last night, saying: "We wish to make it clear The FA investigation into the conduct of Malky Mackay and Iain Moody remains ongoing and no assurances have been given by The FA as to the outcome of this case.
"In the particular and exceptional circumstances of this case, The FA would like to provide some clarification as to the status of the investigation.
"The FA did not come into possession of the relevant evidence relating to the messages until mid-October.
"This came out of many thousands of emails and texts and we are still in the process of obtaining additional information.
"The FA is still investigating whether these messages indicate a culture in which other acts of a discriminatory nature may have taken place.
